Line breeding ????

I have been raising and breeding 3 different bloodlines back and forth with each other for nearly 20 years and 6 generations and have a style dog I like that have had nearly identical traits in the last 3 generations now. I am considering a father/ daughter cross. ..I've never done this before but don't want to water down what I have. .. I'm looking for some input from the people that have done this and what the results were...

answers and half will say go for it and half say dont.
Im in the camp of dont. I have done it and I didnt like the hyperness that came with it.
Skuna River Fred was a product of Mother back to her son and I guess it turned out ok from a reproduction stand point.

I have been breeding the same line for over 30 years. With my experience, I prefer grand daughter back to her grand father or neices and uncles and thats as close as I would recommend.
I have done half brother and half sister crosses and they can go either way. I wouldnt recommend it either.

Cousins work as well.

There are exceptions to all rules and I am sure you will get examples of breedings that worked from those you want to do.
I am just giving my 2 cents worth.

I agree with cripple creek 100%. I too have don all that he has done with similar results. I too like the grand parent X grand child cross or uncle x niece, aunt x nephew crosses the best. And like cripple creek, I have been line breeding my line since 1977.

I would agree with the above guys as well. I did the half brother half sister cross. All but two of the six turned out to be gators. Doubled up on something and it wasn't good.

I've done it both ways.
Mother/son & Father/daughter.
What I can tell u is the 1st gen. pups didn't suit me.
But .......I kept both litters & kept the best of both litters, and those r the ones that I outcrossed and those litters turned out satisfactory.
I recommend not letting any of the pups go from the inbred cross unless u have a group of hunters that r of the same accord as u r.

Most people stop @ the 1st. gen. they get freaked out cuz to them it didn't work. But if u practice selective breeding and have a long term plan/vision in what it is u r trying to accomplishe it is a breeding practice that has work for me.

if both dogs have the traits I want then those 2 are the ones I use regardless of how or if they are related..

I know a guy that has done it for 30 years an he has great dogs.They are natural tree dogs an all the pups will be treeing on there own by 6 or 7 months old.maybe it doesnt work for everyone but it sure has for him

It will intensify all traits, good and bad. It will also bring to the surface any health related issues which may be lingering in the shadows and sometimes some weird quirks will emerge.

I've been seriously considering doing that.I have two dogs for this that I really like.The mother to the young dog is nice too.All these dogs are basically the same .The grand dad and the young dog are probably the best two dogs I've ever owned.The young dog is from a complete out cross.To the guys that have made that cross,my questions are, why did you like it?Were the pups consistently like the sire?Where did you go from there and what happened?

I agree with Toe Cutter. I believe in linebreeding with outcrosses every 3rd or 4th generation, but only with strict selection for traits I want.

I have seen many people through the years that linebreed just for the sake of linebreeding to create a pedigree of their dreams. Unfortunately, that is about all it will create.

If we want to create better hounds, we need to get picker with our breeding stock period!

So, if the two hounds you want to breed show the traits you want, and they don't have any family history of nasty recessive genes ... go for it.

A father daughter cross would be in breeding not line breeding. I'm highly against it. I think all kc's shouldn't even register them. Line breeding is ok. It will bring out all the good and bad traits in a blood line.

I am firm believer in breeding close..Only one problem I have is this, You will get a lot of what you want and a lot of what you don't want. the key to really breeding like this is to CULL HARD. Then once you have what really truly suits you then you can go from there. I have raised litters of Father/Daughter crosses and in one litter get a litter full of early starting get going dogs. Next time around it will be 50/50. So good culling practices is key.

Line breeding preserves the traits you already have. Line breeding does not add anything to what you have, but that is ok, if you like what you have already. Just remember that you will double the good as well as the bad. Problem with this question is the fact that most think it is taboo or someone tried it once and it didn't work, so automatically, it becomes bad in their mind. Well guess what, most outcrosses don't work either. Line breeding is a great tool in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. But that goes for most tools in this world also. How do you think we came up with all the breeds of dogs we have today? Sure was not from making a lot of outcrosses. Inbreeding and line breeding is how you come up with consistency. Agree or disagree, don't matter. Pick up a genetics book and read it. Just my opinion, lol, so don't attack me.
