cross bred

coon hunters are suppose to band together.what is the matter with cross bred dogs. I hunt coons and I don't care if the dog is pink and has two toes on all four of its feet and a head like a opossum. if it trees coons. good sportsman ship is give them a chance and pat them on the back if ya go a huntin and get smoked by a cross bred hound. isn't breeding hounds about genetics. surly we would not be embarrassed to get takin to cleaners by a cross breed.

Me myself i hunt walkers so it wouldnt bother me a bit if ukc allowed cross breds in. I like to hunt against blues, reds, and blacks. Just makes it easier to win. Lol

I agree with you Mr. Roy. Give'em a shot. It's not like we are crossing Zebras on Rhinos. They are 2 UKC registered dogs of 2 diffrent breeds with known ancestory. Who's to say Sackett Jr. bred dogs won't cross well on Smokey River bred dogs for example? Some of us are dumb enough to think you could get the best of both worlds. No knock to the guys who own, hunt, and breed Pure-Breds. Just seems this would be the perfect solution for all parties. JMO

like the man said earlier if we have cross bred dogs in ukc. we are going to to stop most of the guys getting dogs that look like certain breeds and fudging papers around it would help the guys trying to keep their lines pure more than anything else that could be done.

my post from the poll post

I have been a breeder of the same line
of walker dogs for over 30 years and consider myself an established breeder. I for one thing this is a great idea.
The walker breed has bred itself into a corner. there are litterally a hundred dual grand champions at stud right now on this board and in the magazines. I see young dogs at a year old and older for sale on here for mere cents on the dollar for what they were paid for as a weaning pup.
The vast majority of walker hounds now are hot nosed, go into the universe, mouthy radically treeing idiots.
Now I know I will get a hundred posts of come on down and bring your best and old sport will grind out a two day old track and has never treed slick in his life challenges.
You can say what you want...I dont see it. Genetically we have bred the walker breed into this by everybody breeding to the latest Truck winner or world hunt winner and not truly studying the DNA and genetic makeup for each hound before we make the cross.
We have bred our walker hounds into the typical painting yourself into a corner situation. The complete hound of nose, agility, intelligence, stamina, voice, and dominant reproductive ability, and accuracy is all but gone.

With that said, I think it would absolutely create an opportunity for me as a breeder to experiment and create a hound that can truly meet all those requirements.
You can find one or two of those traits in some of the walker studs, but I havent found it as a complete package in one yet.

If it was, you would see complete dominating studs that are reproducing the same in sons, grandsons, and great grandsons. We have watered the gene pool down to a puddle.

I can not see where this would harm anyone. Like someone said above, it would not take but about two generations no more than three before you would see complete dominance in the hunts from this. The black and tan/walker crossed Hardrock is a prime example of this.

UKC I want to throw my vote into the ring on this issue as a big YES for moving forward with this.

I will be one of the first to make a move and make a cross on it because I believe it will help the over all game.

What is the reason not to do it? Those that want to continue on with their breed forever nothing will stand in your way by doing this. AS a matter of fact it will help breeders in the walker arena anyway. There are walker stud adds that have been on the board for years and the owners havent bred an outsid female except his local buddys dog.
You might get some play on your dog from the black and tan man down the road or an English for sure.

Let's think outside the box. I think this will be a win win for UKC as I think the breeding game is stagnant right now and this would create a new excitement that would bring in added money for UKC. And not to mention a whole new converstation down at the feed store pickle barrel and a whole new line of arguments to get deleted by the monitors!!!!

Its like resurrecting the old WWF. Dont delay vote today. I got a cross I am ready to roll with.

also I would like to add that for a fact I know of a walker dog that can be found in bout 75% of most walkers today if not more that was a product of false papers hung on a litter of 5 walker dogs and non of the papers matched. This was done back in the early 60's when registered dogs were just getting going strong.
So what you think is a pure breed is not. I also know of a bluetick in the woodpile of some man bred walkers today. That is fact as well. You have to know some old, old bluetick facts and see some of the names and then just happen to have a copy of a book that is in the library of congress to know the full story behind it.
The cross from the aforementioned false papers issue produced multiple world champions down the lineage line.

So walker men we cant and have no right to disparage anyone wanting to do this.

I for one aint skeered. Like I said, I'll step up to the plate and start the experiment right here in my yard. I like a breeding challenge. Man this would be like giving a mad scientist a full grown college level science kit and lab and say go for it.

I have a litter now that was an accident. A gr nt black dog got throught the fence and bred my nt ch walker female. I am Planning on Keeping one and trying it out. but it would make it alot easier if UKC had a cross bred program.

That is not true. Not all can be single registered. If you were to breed World Nite Champion Mr. Clean to a redbone and all pups meet the redbone breed standards, They still cannot be single registered. The Redbone breed does NOT allow dogs that are known to be half of another coonhound breed to be single registered. Someone could lie about it and single register the pups but why not make a Cross Breed so someone can be honest and show the full pedigree of the pups?

ukc

The one I've always loves bout ukc is they are fair and understanding. They also try to keep everyone happy cause this is a sport that is suspose to get us away from work etc to have fun. Now with that said why would it matter to joe if Dan wanted to hunt a walker cross with a redbone yet he wanted a nice set papers to go with it. I'm not sure of the problem why people and breeds are getting upset over it. It's a different breed, it has nothing to do with any single breed . ITS called CROSSBRED.
