Anybody treeing more than 1 in a tree or seeing several on outside of dens?..I have only seen 1 coon a tree and all boars so Im going to go out on a limb-pun intended- and say boars are interested but sows aint ready so rut is going to be in mid/late feb here.

I wondered if maybe the females were staying in the dens because of the cold and bad weather waitn for them boars to come find them. They prob know them boars cant keep from searching for a lady no matter the weather. Been only 1 coon a tree for us and only boars last few times out and CCCCOOOOLLLDDDD. Just a theory lol your theory sounds good too.

Yes sir Troy it has been brutal....the wind tied in with it makes it unbarable.The forecast goes into 7 days with no let up.

That is the natural way the coons breed regardless of conditions,

The sows will lay up and the Boars will check dens and the sow chooses which boar she will let in, thats why you will catch a boar on the outside of a den once in a while.

During the rut when you tree a double most of the time it is 2 boars running together and fighting to see who gets to mate. But in the end its the sow that chooses, if she dont want him in he aint getting in.Not sure about up north there but here they are in full rut!!!!!!!!!!!

I did not know that Larry. That is an interesting fact thanks for shareing. An old timer told me one time during the rut when you tree 2 coons shoot the lowest one because it would be the male chasing the female that was higher. I always thought that was a true myth from an old timer because seemed to always be right because when i would shoot out the lower one itd be a male. According to what you said there both males no wonder the myth always seemed to be right hahaha.

I guess I might fit that catagory,

back in the 70's when coon were 30 an $40 dollars a piece I didnt leave many and most all doubles during the peak of the rut were both boars. Sows very seldom get very far away from the den during the rut.She is picky and her best defense to fight off unwanted boars is in her den, she has no need to run, the boars will seek her out.

If you would have shot the top one during the peak rut it would have been a boar also most of the time.

I am not sure why a boar would ever stay down low in the tree.

Now in another 6 weeks or so if a coon is down low it will most likely be a sow, they are carrying there young so they dont want to climb to high and she will most likely be huging the main trunk of the tree. During this period if the coon is higher and out away from the main trunk you can about bet it is a boar as a rule of thumb

That all seems to make sense. When i said lower coon i didnt mean they were low in the tree they would still be up there high just one coon lower then the other. Ya i always just shoot one out no more then you get out of them so never got to see if they were both boars.

They're rutting for sure. Had a pair in front of my house mating for hours about two weeks ago in broad daylight. Been only seeing boars for some time now.

Kinda glad coon didnt rate as high as many thought...keep em from pounding em so hard.

be back going out to trudge the snow with some youngens

I think this weather has been hard on some varmits...I think the coon are still mating..or at least the boars are still hunting for some hot ones.

Was hunting last night and training some dogs for guys and treed this den..and a coon sittin up higher... Id betcha that was a boar.
