How would you rule this?
On a registered dog cast a tree is made and when the judge gets to the tree he finds all dogs there, but one dog has quills in his face. The tree has a coon in it. I ask this because on a recent cast just that happened EXCEPT...before the dog was even struck in he came into the cast and had the quills in his face. Two dogs were struck in and trailing so he couldn't handle his dog to remove the quills without scratching. The dog went out, got struck in, and treed. He was scored plus because the quills were a "pre-existing condition" prior to his being struck in. If the cast hadn't seen the quills prior to his tree what points would you minus (strike and or tree) and how would you justify the minus? He picked these quills up without a bark.
This has come up before and Kellem stated the quills alone can't get a dog minused or scratched (NtCh).

I don't buy it. If a dog got close enough for a quill pig to smack him in the face it must have felt threatened and that should qualify as "molesting" off game. If it was a nt ch or gr nt cast the dog should get scratched and a registered dog should draw some minus. The question is what do you minus when the dog is sitting under a coon.
with jim on this one sorry

Jim's right. UKC's official ruling is quills or skunk smell does NOT get a dog scratched or minused.

No off game was seen = no minus.
Same as a dog smelling like a skunk or rolling in cow or otter scat. He did not bark. He was not struck. There were no points posted to minus.

if the dog does'nt bark on the track, how can the track get him minused? In the above case the dog wasn't struck.

I've seen dogs with quills in their legs, chest and even nose that I considered broke from porkies but if they got a mouthful that's a different thing. I've come across dead possums that somebody gave a quick shake and went on without a bark. Had a few close encounters with off game myself that I didn't plan on.
Would you scratch a dog for getting snake bit ?

Problem is UKC has officially ruled on this and quills and smelling like skunks do not get a dog scratched or minused.
That's why everyone was amazed at the possum tracks in the snow/mud whatever ruling. It was completely inconsistant with previous rulings.

It sounds to me like the Porky "molested" the dog, not the other way around.
