intresting cast

I was in a cast this weekend that was pretty intresting. Let me start by saying I have never one single time been minused for striking the wrong dog, pretty much due to the fact that most dogs I have owned have very unique voices. First dump this one fella, we will call him Bob, strikes right off the rip for 100, a couple dogs were barking including mine when he struck so I thought okay then I struck for 75. The dogs pitter pattered around for a good 15 minutes and I never heard Bobs dog during that entire time until I treed mine for 125 and he treed for 75.

Next cut we turned them loose and my female gave her very unique one of a kind squall and Bob says you struck my dog. I said your kidding me right? The judge said no it was my dog. They said yours is a chop mouth track dog. I asked them a question then. I said so because mine is a track mouth dog she can't give any different bark then? I said mine squalls EVERY time she hits a track, then starts chopping. Bob got struck while we were talking for 75 and I never heard his dog again until all of us were declared treed which was a good 15 20 minutes.

Last dump we had 25 minutes left.

Cut 3 dogs loose as 1 withdrew. Right off the rip the third cast member strikes for 100 and it was legit. Then my female gave her good squall bark and Bob yells strike my dog! I stood there for a minute and mine was chopping away right after she have that squallo. I yelled let me to Bob let me know when you hear your dog because that is ALL my dog and you struck my dog. He said no way my dog is in there and the judge said i'm pretty sure I heard his dog with yours.

Well my dog got struck 50 yards in front of us and she was the ONLY dog barking at the time. Mine started getting further and further and I asked to walk up. I said you know its amazing you have gotten either first or second strike all night and Ihave yet to hear your dog open a single time on track. My dog got treed for 125 and about 4 minutes gone on her tree his dog came to cover.

It all didn't end up mattering but isn't that amazing? A guys english dog is my best guess silent and he gets her struck for 100 or 75 all night?

I just thought it was ironic how I was accused of striking his dog but we never heard his dog open a single time. Once 2 of the dogs would start opening ol Bob would say there she is there she is. LOL

In all honesty I would say the guy had never hunted with the dog until that night or the night before.

lol check your hip pocket ,,see if you still got your wallet man ,,

I have had the same thing happen a few times, old trick. They accuse you of striking their dog right off the bat to confuse you. Another type that will do it are the ones handling a dog that they have never hunted.

One time I was pleasure hunting with this guy. He used to post on this message board some. Very well known guy and successful competition hunter. I heard my dog open on track and he said it was his dog. My dog treed and he said it was his dog again. I have not heard a dog bark except mine for the last 10 minutes. I KNEW it was my dog. WIthout a doubt. The weird part is, my dog BAWLS and his dog CHOPS. My dog treed and treed and we walked in to her. We was less than 50 yards from her before he admitted it was not HIS DOG. We got to my dog treeing, and there's the possum !!!!! I said, you sure don't want to just go ahead and claim it man ????

Might as well split the strike points nowdays anyhow. Amazing to me that here we might have 2 coons in a mile from where we cut loose but usuall2 or 3 dogs are struck within the min or just after on every cast lol. Ain't nothing you can do either because they don't hush. Might as well start pitching mine in there with em.

Yep which is exactyl why they should make all strike points the same value.

Ol Bob started squalling on the last tree his dog covered mine on in about 2 minutes with a dog still out trailing. LOL I just started laughing, he clearly was either very hunt dumb or he was playing it off that way.

I have never been in a cast where a man got struck in or right at the minute every single drop and then never hear the dog open a single time.

He is lucky I wasn's judgeing he would have been minused about 4 times.

this type thing happens all the time. so heck why not every one just throw your hat in the ring when a dog opens lol. i got beat a few years back by a dog that never opened his mouth until another dog located. and man was he fast to get treed. the handler knew this dog well and when another dog come on the tree he knew his dog was going to snatch it. and sure enough, some how he got his dog struck and when dogs come treed his dog was right their to cover and grab a few trees. after the hunt the handlers admitted that his hound had never treed a coon alone, but i quote...he was one heck of a cover dog. went hunting with the same dog a few weeks back and he is still doing the same thing only now this dog is Grand Nite. the owner laughs about it and said he could count on one hand the coons this 4 yr old hound has treed alone. hmmm makes you wonder don't it. he said he don't do the HTX hunts because most nights this dog won't leave the truck alone. this is a good example of sorry dog and slick handler.

There are some dogs that no doubt win like that but in all honesty if the guy has ever been with a good dog he holds his head in shame because he knows his dog is not legit.

yes this would cause me to hang my head, but for this guy he has a Grand and that is all that matters to him. I don't care about the titles anymore, performance and pleasure are what i look for now days. This guy has been in the woods with many nice hounds and he knows his dog is not a coon treeing machine. but he has the titles. some folks are blind to quality for sake of papers.

This is the type thing i have tried to explain to people for years and everybody acted like i was crazy. People look at a title and take it for face value when they should really check the dog out. I wish UKC had some set of rules in place to weed out the counterfiet dogs.

All they would have to do is go to a countdown tree format. Unfortunately that would weed out many dogs in a couple of the breeds.

counterfeit dogs as you say can be weeded out very easily. In fact, there would be no weeding to do if evryone would just enforce the honor rules that are already in place. If you know its wrong, they do too. If you know its wrong and do not try to enforce the rules as written, you are a part of the on going problem. Stop complaining, and start using the written rules, and you'll see how easy it is for things to change.

So Robert for future refrence, what do you suggest I do next time somebody strikes my dog and gets away with it because the other cast members just "arent" sure who's dog it was?

The rules are there sure but for any set of rules to work you have to have a group of people willing to learn them AND enforce them properly.

i have fussed and complained, took things back to the club, just to get told i should know my dog better. i don't know what my dog is doing because i have a garmin, i know by what he is saying. i know when my dog has opened or not. and if i ever do strike the wrong dog, i will tell the judge to minus me. but some out there will take their strike and tree anyway they can get it.
