$40.00 dollars more for the DC40 and prolly not worth a cent more than the 30.

You heard wrong.

They are basically the same collar with the exception of the charging ports and the ability to lock other receivers from tracking your dog.

In my side by side tests they performed the same.

The only condition I haven't checked yet is swimming for a very long period of time. I have had them swim rivers and such, but not like those guys in Louisianna/Arkansas have them that swim for the entire race.

Rip, the biggest difference I can come up with in them is the $40.00 but I have never used a DC 40 myself. As someone who has considerable experience with both units, do you feel the DC 40 is worth the extra $40.00?

I don't see any difference in performance. They do the same job, at least the 40 that I have does.

The biggest thing is no wire to become disconnected like the 30 has (between the GPS and the collar), the day glow collar, locking the dogs from being tracked by another receiver, and the charging ports. If those are worth 40 bucks to you then yes.

As for performance in the field, there's not a quarters worth of difference in thier range/locking on sattelites/ etc.

I have not seen a 40 yet. How is the charging port improved, and will it stand the test of time?

It seems like once I started having to mess around scratching and cleaning my 20 and 30 ports the problem just gets worse.

I admit I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer

But I am still trying to do the math. DC40 is 40 to 50 dollars more than th DC30, but a one dog bundle is a hundred more for the 40. Wouldn't a guy be better off buying a DC30 bundle and buying a DC40 for a second collar?

I bought my Garmin with the 40. My friends have the 30's with there system. As soon as i got mine I did the latest updates. When we hunt together I cant tell a difference. Although there has been a couple times theres loses signal and mine would'nt, but I think its because of the upgrades. (they hav'nt upgraded theres) The thing i like about mine and am glad I chose the 40. Is the collar lock, wich is added security to your dog, and the charging system. From hunting with my buddy's, I think the charging system on the 30's is a disaster waiting to happen, imo just a poor design. All I have to do is slap the cradle on my collar and its charging, everytime. So if you ask me the 40's is the way to go. Just whatever system you choose, do the upgrades asap.

I believe I have had a garmin for almost 5 years, I still use my 20 when I hunt 2 dogs...I have never done any updates, my 220 will lose signal less often than those that have done the updates, and I have never had trouble with the system at all.

Im not saying the updates are a bad thing, but I dont believe there is any measurable performance to be gained by it.

Well that depends on what the update is for.

Many of the updates are for ease of operation (like turning the power on and off easier). Some are for better info (the triple blink for sattelite signal).

BUT if the upgrade changes the sattelites used to lock on because others were suboptimal, or other things then they can affect performance as well.

I hunt as much as anyone.....I have a new 40 and it is a piece of junk, been updated a few times, and it the farthest it will pick up is 400 ft
The 30's I have suit me fine as long as I remember to charge them.
