Anyone used a 357 magnum on bear?

Them long guns sure get heavy with all the other garb you have to carry along and lead dogs too. Ive got a gp100 357 mag that I was thinking about carrying, but will it do the trick????

be one less bear hunter around.

Taurus makes a nice 44 mag that is a smaller frame and is as tight made like that gp100.It's called the Tracker.I've killed bear with that 357 ''BUT'' You need to break the bear down with such a small round.Do yourself and your dogs a favor and buy a heavyier round.

it has the stopping power but like everything shot its all about where the slug lands.

357 in the head is a kill shot, anywhere else, start running!

I have seen a few shot with the 357, and a bunch with the 44 mag. If my dog is under the tree and you are useing a 357 I will be standing right beside you with my 44, and will probably get to use it if ya know what I mean. The 357 is ok for a perfect situation, but thats not often the case with hounds and bears. Save yourself the large vet bills or worse, and get a 41 or 44 mag.

using big bore calibers is not showing respect for the game, it shows the complete opposite and you might as well use a hand grenade or howitzer. There is a reason that the calibers have shrunk from those of a 120 years ago.

big bore = one shot kills that is respect for the game 357 is not a good bear gun I know a guy that found out the hard way ER .

I wouldnt use any thing but a 41 or 44 or larger. A 357 doesnt have enough umph for the job.

Rangerman evidently you havent been in a really close quarter engagement with your smaller caliber!!!

Oh I have hunted hogs and bears for years and never had problems using a 357 or a 45. Its all about shot placement and learning when to shoot and not to shoot (hunter safety course in the first 15 minutes of class).

44 Mag

I have never had to use it, but it is great to carry, the one I pack is a smith & Wesson AirLite Pd, super lite and 44Mag!

most 357 and 44's are revolvers, meaning that unless you need more than 5 or 6 shots either should work well. I use a 357 in both carbine and revolver when hunting, one cartridge two guns, my brother has used a 357 sig which gives 10+ oppurtunities but have only seen him use1 or 2 rounds max.

357, 41, 44 and so on. It all depends on how good of a shot you are.

well, I think ive come to a conclusion. Thinking about getting a T/C encore single shot pistol in the 460 S&W cartridge. That way, I can shoot the high power 460, or the milder 454 casull, or the weaker 45 long colt.

For the record, I guess ever case is different. I witnessed a 430 pound taken from a single shot out of a 357 magnum. It was bayed up and with 1 shot it fell deader than a hammer. On the other hand, Last year I shot a 341 pound bear out of a tree with a 35 Whelen( which is a 30-06 necked up to a 35 caliber) and the first shot was directly in the bottom of the head and came out the top....... was not enough. Talking about a fur storm. Another head shot finished him, but not instantly.

I was just kinda wondering if anyone did carry a 357 mag.
