coonhound chronicles part I

ok, thought i would start this thread just to track my pup's and my progress. he is 6 months old. comments are welcome.

last night, first night out with skeet by ourselves. mind you, no tracking system at all, no major light, just a small light, a backpack with basic first aid supplies and a leash. i dont have any chaps or specialized boots, just a pair of rubber knee boot from tractor supply that leak because of the pup attacking them. and i didnt bring the 22.
so, let us begin. got to a major track of land with a creek on one side and what i thought to be 15 million miles of corn. looked like it to me. got to figure, i am 135 lbs. soaken wet, slightly afraid of the dark, and have a very inexperienced dog. as soon as we turned the first corner at dusk, still on leash going crazy, what do we see? white flags EVERYWHERE. oh crap i think, he thinks , sweet!!!! i say no and make him sit by me until they disperse. took him over to the tracks and tell him no again. then he decides , while still on leash, to take me for the grand tour of the middle of the cornfield. that was fun. shoulder sore today. got to the other side, and it was hay, mowed down as far as the eye could see. i say a prayer to god as i look up to the stars that i can leave with my pup tonight. let him off the leash. zoom. gone into the night. about ten minutes went by and i started gettin worried i really screwed up. all of a sudden he is back again, just to be gone again. i got it. he checked in with me. feelin good now. UNTIL, found him whining by the creek. oh my gosh. i know this creek is dangerous but man was it really roaring because of the rain. this creek has taken many a life, both human and canine. i stayed calm and called him, he looked at me barked a couple times as i inched over twoards the bank. then he headed me off by takin me back to the hay field again. all i could think of is got to get away from the creek, he loves water. well, at this time i figured out i lost the leash. oh boy. while walkin back, i thought the way we came , he was in the field not movin, just waggin his tail. oh no, the mouse hunter has struck again. nope, it was the leash. go figure. so i think that i am takin the easy way back, he wants to go thru the corn field again, no way. back around it. well, i am gettin used to the dark and so is he by now. that was NO SHORTCUT. good lord, at a tree line on the field, ok, maybe some coon. into the puckerbrush he goes, barked a couple of times and i go crashin in there excited as all heck. darn,,, if i didnt almost go into the creek. man that creek is like a snake, curvy and sometimes silent. never could figure out what he had, just told him he was awesome. finally, after losing my bearings because we now are into grape vines and more prickers than a man can imagine we struck back into the corn. man that stuff makes you itch. the light was goin dim now, and i started gettin a little nervous, cloudy sky, dark. and sure enough, he takes me right to my vehicle. i was so happy. you know if you ever watched enough spooky movies when you were a kid you would jump into your bed at night, well after i calmly told him to load, no problem. i darn near cleared my whole durango to get my own butt in there. locked the doors, started it, turned on the heated seat for him, we both looked at each other and i gave him a big smooch. time elapsed was 1 hour and 40 minutes. time flies when you are out there.
get home, husband asks, did he tree or open up? nope i say, but i am darn proud of him. AND ME.
everyone always says, time in the woods is the best trainin tool. we will go to different places every night if i can. then we both can relax and get down to it.
chronicle II to come next.

sounds like my first time out. Flashlight no tracking collar or even a lighted collar and turned her loose. I was a nervous wreck. But she did the same thing came back after about 10 minutes. Now if I dont go get her I dont think she would come back for a looong time. Cant wait to read the next one.

Love the story! You have inspired me to go out by myself with the dog. I always go w/ my husband. Yes i am a chicken. I guess it is time to buck up. Hope to hear more about you and other girls hitting the woods

man, i am not kiddin you, at first chicken was not the word to use. may be sissy la-la. i just get tired of relying on everyone else to do something i love. relying on others sometimes will turn you into a drinker stuck at home.lol

I hunted alone, a lot for 5 yrs. I would find someone to hunt with for safety reason. Im a grown man and You can get in a bad way quick with no help. I didnt have a cell phone then. but there are still things that can happen where a cell phone would not save you, Im not trying to scare you. I know you are aware of dangers by the way you spoke of the creek. It sounds like you have a nice place to hunt . Good luck with your pup.

EXCITED, OH YEAH, doin some training

Unless the mix dog is a solid coon tracking and treeing dog I personally would not take it with the pup just to have another dog along. If you think one dog with no tracker, barely a light, and no shocker was rough, wait till you try it with 2.........Unless that dog is rock solid, leave it at home.

this dog is solid, for a mix, been already training my pup by leavin him in bushes and lettin him find his way back. he is solid on coon though, looks like a lab, his mom is pure walker. darn good hunter. noone knows who the dad was.
