Live coon

Just wondering at what age do you show a pup their first live coon in a trap or roll cage??

For me it just depends on the pup, the maturity of the pup has a lot to do with it to me. JMO.

let the pup decide, start maybe at 6 months, or if you want to push the pup maybe 4 months, and if he shows interest at all let an older dog bark on it, if he shys away he isnt ready yet.JMO

I never show a pup a live coon before that pup is 5 to 6 months old. Usually a hide at about 4 or 5 months. The maturity of the pup has a lot to do with it. They will let you know when they are ready.

Also, don't believe all this bull on here about pups split treeing their own coon and holding their tree at 5 or 6 months old. I've been at coonhunting for over fifty years, only seen one pup that did anywhere close to that. That includes all breeds that anyone has had. Just never seen it. Heard some claim it, but never happened when I was in the woods with them. LOL

I usually show mine a live coon with an older dog somewhere between 5-6 months, I was just wondering what age everyone else showed theirs because I know majority of people use different training methods. Keep the replies coming.

Never show em a live coon!! If it's in them they will show you a live coon. JMO I seen to many young dogs looking in a tree for something rather than using their nose.

Jerry,i thought the same way you do about 6 months old split treeing and such until my buddy got a little female out of elvis attack lol. We were training other pups with her before she was a year old. It blew me away honestly. I guess there are always going to be pups that have it in them from day one.

I have a 10 year old male that was training the 6 month old pups when he was a year old. He was one of those rare exceptions that treed his own coon at 7 or 8 months old. But, he did not do it consistantly until he was about 10 months old.
I get upset at these guys on here that talk about "culling" a pup if he's not 'superdog' at 6 months old. Most pups don't mature enough until they are 8 TO 10 months old. Some don't even mature until they are over a year old.

I always let the pup find it on its own. make a lil drag and hide the cage out of sight and see how it reacts. If interested I turn the coon loose out of sight of the pup wait a few mins then put it on a hot track.
If not interested I try again in a month or so.

The whole idea is just to get the dog to understand what its supposed to be after...thats it. The more the rest is learned in the woods, the better.IMO

i start out by showing some tails. once you can tell he gets excited off just seein the tail wave around he should be ready for the real thing. i'll wave it around and get him interested in it and then hide it from him where he knows it is. if he still wants it after its hidden, he oughta be ready. typically about 5 or 6 months old. i also always put coon scent on it too. just so he associates the smell with the tail even when he's only a young pup.

I HAVE A CAPTIVE PERMIT TO KEEP 2 COON ON MY PLACE BUT I ONLY USE THEM FOR THE LIVE SENT. I CANT GET A CARRY PERMIT I USE A NET AND START AT SIX WEEKS OLD MOST OF THE PUPPYS WILL BE TREEING THE NET GOOD AT 10 TO12 WEEKS OLD ITREED AROUND 30 COON WITH A 10 MO OLD THIS WINTER IN THE WILD NO FEEDERS THE SENT AND NET WORKS GREAT FOR ME.
