? about bottle feeding
I have been bottle feeding a week old pup, my vet says I can put the pup back on the mother Tuesday. My question is, should I keep bottle feeding until it is weaned or take my chances with the mother. My concerns are will she accept it back, and the temps are suppose to drop.I have a really good whelping box and it is under roof and on concrete. The pup had 3 days of mothers milk so I'm sure it got some colostrum but I was wanting some opinions. The pup appears to be doing well so far, so what do you all think? Also, have any of you done this and how did the dog turn out?
why ?
Why was the pup taken off the mother ?
If you do put the pup back on her make mamma lay down and put the pup right on her to nurse first thing . Once its nursing she should take it back ok .
I've found that bottle feeding them usually gets they're little bellies so full and stretched out that sometimes nursing is not enough to fill them up unless the gyp is just gushing with milk . you may try doing a little of both. put the pup back with mamma if she accepts it, and then supplement it with one or two bottle feedings a day for another week or so.

EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
Behavior
[qoute]"PUPS THAT ARE RAISED ON A BOTTLE, I HAVE COME TO FIND, HAVE NO FEAR OF ANYTHING, BECAUSE THEY THINK OF YOU AS MAMA AND YOU'RE NOT SCARED OF A COON OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT SO THEY ARENT EITHER.
THEY DONT GET THOSE "PARENT INSTILLED" FEAR OF COYOTES OR ANYTHING ELSE LIKE THAT. DOSENT MEAN THE WONT BE SCARED OF THEM, IT'S JUST NOT AN INSTANT REACTION."[qoute]
Interesting thoughts on animal behavior

JEFF, IT'S THE TRUTH.
THE PUPS THAT WE RAISED ON THE BOTTLE WERE THE BOLDEST PUPS WE'VE EVER RAISED.
I HONESTLY THINK THEY THOUGHT OF US AS THEIR MAMA, AND WHEN WE INTRODUCED THEM TO "CRITTERS" THEY WERE NOT ONE BIT SCARED, AND I CREDITED THIS TO THE FACT THAT THEY COULD SENSE WE WERENT SCARED SO THEY DIDNT HAVE ANYTHING TO BE SCARED OF.

Thanks for the responses,I had to take the pups off the mother because she developed a infection and mild mastitus.I had to take the mother to the vet where she recieved IV's and antibiotics. The vet said I could put the pups back on her in 4 days. I just put the pup in with her and she started cleaning him and layed down,I will go back out in an hour or so and if the pup doesn't look full or appears cold I'm bringing it back in.I hope things work out,Thanks Todd
I had to bring pup back in and start bottle feeding again due to lack of mothers milk. The pup doesn't seem to want the powdered milk from the vet I was feeding so I switched to 2% milk and water 50/50, it really likes this .I was wondering if this milk will hurt the pup.
I have been told that cows milk
dont have adiquite nutrition in it for pups, may want to try swicthing brand of milk replacer powder. JMO it may or may not work for you.
BOTTLE FEEDING
I HAD A PUP OUT OF AN OLD ENGLISH FEMALE I USED TO HAVE,MY WIFE STARTED BOTTLE FEEDING IT WHEN IT WAS 2 DAYS OLD, SHE KEPT IT IN A LAUNDRY BASKET ON A HEATING PAD, IT DID REAL WELL, BUT WE STARTED NOTICING IT S FRONT LEGS WERE BOWED ,AT 6 WEEKS OLD THE LITTLE GAL WAS WALKING ON HER KNEES ,WE TOOK HER TO THE VET,AND HE SAID SHE HAD RIKKITS, IF I SPELLED IT RIGHT,ANYWAY HE SAID IT WAS A RARE BONE DEFORMATY CAUSED BY LACK OF NUTRITION IN THE MILK, WE WERE EVEN FEEDING HER PUPPY REPLACEMENT POWDER, HE SAID SHED NEVER WALK ON HER FRONT FEET , LOTS OF TIME AND REASPONSABILITY INVESTED BUT WHAT COULD WE DO, WE DID OUR BEST. I WISH YA LOTS OF LUCK MINER.
IM not saying it helps
But does it help if u mix the powder a little stronger than called for
...
kybluetickman I had a pup do the same thing but the situation was a bit different... the pup was the runt and the momma didnt have enough milk for the pups so the guy who had them was feeding them milk replacer and puppy chow (@ 2 weeks old)... when i got this pup i continued with the same feed and the pup started rapidly growing doubling his weight every few days and then started walking on the tops of his feet (like yours) cause they had curled right under him... the vet felt he was growin so fast and his bones faster then his tendons... we splinted his legs and switched him over to just puppy food and water and within two days his legs were back to normal and he had slowed down a bit on the growing and grew up to be just fine.
Miner I had used whole milk enriched with Vit D and also powdered Goats milk... Not sure how old your pups are but could also try adding a little baby cereal or canned dog food in with the milk too...

put that pup on goats milk 2percent milk doesn't have anywhere of what a pup needs then your cutting nothing in half with water if you can't det goats milk use canned condensed milk it has most of the water removed and more nutrition per volume that puppy needs all she can get out of what she consumes

Two choices: either go to a pet store and get the milk specifically for puppies, Hartz has some and so does another company, but I cant think of their name right off hand. Anyway, the one I cant think of LOL has colostrum in it. Ive used it and had good results. the other option is to go to the grocery store and buy EVAPORATED MILK and mix it with a full can of water. I raised a litter this way before as well and had excellent results.
