Question about youth auctions

Okay im not trying to stir things up I just want opinions. When people donate stud services to these benefit auctions on here sometimes they put minimum bids on their dogs that are much higher than the auction minimum and as a result several dont sell.I realize everyone wants the privilege of saying there dog brought the most but I was just wondering there reason for this.Maybe im missing something.

AND IF THEY WANT TO SELL IT

1. PUT THE OWNERS NAME
2. PUT THE PEDIGREE
3. PUT THE TOWN OR CITY AND STATE

It would be impossible to put all this info on the auction page because there is a 10,000 character limit on all posts. Most auctions list the name of the dog and the state it is located in and encourage the owners to post any other info about their dog that they want to. This is like free advertising on the main page for the stud owner.

question

I guess ill rephrase my question. What im asking is if a stud owner donates a stud fee to be auctioned why do they care what it sells for?If they want to help the kids let it bring what it brings.People do want to see the pedigree of these dogs so most put them even if they have to start a new thread.

Youth Auction

I know of one instance where one top stud sold at auction for 25.00 and before it was all said and done the stud service had been traded or sold to someone else for alot more. I think the stud owners are doing a good thing donating their dogs fee but some feel like the youth association may have gotten shorted a little. I know where you are coming from because the stud service on the Ga. auction on the english dog Cutter was 150.00 and that was the minium bid and I had to bid on it just because i wanted it. Sometime its not about the dollar amount it is for the cause. If the owner sets the minium to high just bid on another one. Thanks Rusty

auction

It specifies in most that the stud service may not be traded ,sold or given away.

Speaking for myself I don't care what the stud fee sells for, but I am particular about what females I breed. Most of the stud fee bids on there now are only averaging $25. I'd rather donate the money and not hassle taking in a female that I don't know anything about. If people care about helping the kids out they will bid a little higher and not be so cheap. Some of the stud fees on some of these dogs are a lot higher than $100. All depends on what your priorities are.

I have won some of these but, I just done it to help the kids. If want to breed to that stud I would just as soon pay him his regular fee, Than him feel like he was shorted its all about the kids anyway.

stud fees

I have bought 8 in the past and have never used any but will sometime.Usually the ones I buy are ones with no bids at the end so they are a donation.I would help kids any way I can and its great that breeders do this.

Posted by s/s on 09-09-2007 05:50 AM:

O.K.

First of all let me start by saying I donated my dog for stud service & I did set a min. bid of $50.00. Now, let me say, I did this not for personal nor profitable reasons, but as everyone has pointed out it was for the kids. My dog is a total unknown. Only a pleasure hunter with a pretty boy title. I sure do not think he would be a more worthy dog than most that are donated. BUT, if I did have the honor of someone bidding on my dog, I feel the kids are more worthy than $25.00 dollars.

O.K.

Let's turn the tables a bit. I don't think I have not ONE time ever seen ANY of the female owners bidding on these DONATED studs, offer the first red cent of procedes made off these pups donated back to the cause. If anyone has, then I stand corrected before hand. And I would say to that person how admirable & thoughtful their donation was. And if you haven't, then my momma always told me that if I ever pointed a finger at someone in blame, to always remember I had three more fingers pointing back.

O.K.

So lets do some math:

A stud donation fee: $25.00
An average litter of 6 pups
@ lets say $100 ea. $600.00
First round of puppy shots
@ $8.00 Ea. $48.00
A bottle of wormer $25.00

Hmmmmm, that looks like a profit of $502.00

We all know that names and pedigrees sell, so lets just say we could even up the price on these puppies out of these well named studs dogs being offered. NOW LETS SEE WHO POCKETS
SOME EXTRA CASH

Now we could say what if this, this and this happened to the female or puppies that caused extra cost.
We could also say what if this, this and this happened to the top of the line stud dog you have just won the privledge of breeding your mediyoker female for $25.00.

Ya know, even if these stud dog owners do have something to gain from this min. bid. The careers of these stud dogs could be over in a flash by an ill tempered female. For what a $25.00 donated stud fee? A little free advertisement? I don't think so !! I really can't believe folks are even thinking like this. Like somebody said, if one stud fee is too high for your taste, then dang, go on and bid on the next one you can get for cheep !! There is always plenty to bid from.... Oh, yeah, we want the good stuff. We just don't want to pay much for it. So, what, is the $150.00 or so min. bid for the dog to high or the kids just not worthy of $150.00?
I just really don't understand why everything has to be tainted like this. This was just wrong. The way people think on these lines just saddens me. This was for the kids ya'll !! My gosh !!!!

Oh, yeah..........JUST MY OPINION....Sabrina

I have donated several and will continue to but why should we not put some kind of bottom dollar to it yes we want to raise money for the kids and it gives some people a chance to get a good discount on a breeding. But why does everyone who does bid ,bid so low that it is a joke. when you know darn well with even a average litter of 8 say at $200.00 each is 1600 the only one making out is the owner of the dam not the kids I just want to make sure the kids get enough to make a defference

minimum

If the auction sets a minimum $50,$100 I wouldnt mind.I was just asking a question.Consider also some people are close to none of these dogs so if they do breed your looking a 4 hr drive one way with gas that is expensive regardless of the cost of the stud.I have made many donations to kids I guarentee as much as anyone else on here so im not cheap.I also send my bid and tell them to raise it to my maximum bid as others bid.I try to encourage others to bid and if im not mistaken many people put pups in these auctions that are not stud dog owners. As far as the post about someone breeding a mediocre female if that person turned up with the full stud price would you turn it away? Also some people would fear breeding a very good female to a mediocre stud dog and yes there are many out there.I have driven 3 hours to hunt with a stud dog and his pups and wouldnt have bred if it was free.

First of all very good post S/S
Secondly you can bet your bottom dollar I'd turn down a full stud fee on a mediocre female. I didn't stand JJ Jr. at public stud and believe me I could have made a fortune on stud fees, but chose not to. I bred him to my own females that could produce and a handful of others that had great females. Even so, the majority of the people that bought pups from me didn't hunt them as they just wanted the "name brand" dog in the pedigree. And I guarantee my pups.

for the kids

I believe alot of these people that say they do it for the kids dont. They bid on these dogs to benifit themselves and get a cheap stud fee.Its not about the kids anymore its about getting a studd fee for cheap.People getting two or 3 stud fees for cheap.couple for 25 and another for a little more.if its about the kids just donate the money.Thats why peple put a minuim bid on their studs.

Posted by rocky tanner on 09-10-2007 05:41 PM:

A stud fee on a dog that I'm involved with has been donated to several benefit auctions. at least 5 and probably 6 or 7. We decided this year to set the minimum at $150. That's 40% off what others pay when they come here to breed. In the past we have seen his stud certificates on this board for sale by individuals that bought it. The minimum was 150 and at 2 auctions one sold and one didn't that means we averaged $75 between the 2 it cost thousands of dollars to pay up fees and enrollments, along with advertising. Just last year I donated a pup and it sold for $80. 2 or 3 months later the pup was advertised and sold on this board for $350.

Now I do see your point about the youth being left out, when people don't bid. That's why I always make sure I bid on several studs and pups and have also donated pups that were sold with no minimums. I have also in the past just sent a check to donate to the cause.

I recommend if people are upset that there are minimums then just cut 'em a check and donate as little as you want!!!!
