hunting curs.

hi, i'm from the coonhound board. normally i am showing and hunting english and bluetick hounds. but i do have a mountain cur. he is about 10mos old. i have no papers on him. his owner was killed in an accident and the papers were lost. this little boy is coon crazy. i want to hunt him on coons. i really have no interest in squirrel hunting. how can i get him registered? can i hunt him ukc? i've heard that curs can hunt with hounds in pkc. is this true?
i would appreciate any information at all.
thanks.

You can single register him with UKC as a Treeing Cur and hunt him in Cur/Fiest events, coon or squirrel. Not Hound events.

You can hunt him "with" the hounds in PKC/NKC/ACHA.

Hope this helps.

Are you sure about ACHA??

Posted by astringer on 08-28-2007 02:18 PM:

Perry, I'm sure. I have two curs registered with ACHA/WCCHR. There are a few more also. This question was just discussed on Buckshot's "Coondawgs.com" website. The President of ACHA, Harry Harris posted that as long as the dog is open on trail, it can be hunted in ACHA.

thanks. this really helps. i'll have to work on that single registration. is there someone to contact about this? in coonhounds you have to contact the representative from the breed association that you want to single register with. is this the same for curs?
what is wcchr? i have heard of nkc, acha, and wtda.

WCCHR is the registry of ACHA. There is no representative for Cur/Fiest single registration. Get a form from the website, fill it out, send it to UKC and they'll do all the rest.

Don't know anything about it other than they also hunt curs and hounds together. I see their hunt reports in Full Cry.

Why is it that UKC recognizes the cur breed, but won't let you hunt "with the hounds"?? I have a hound registered with them, but why would I register my cur with them when I can't hunt at the local clubs. I don't care about winning at all, but to hunt at the local events would be nice, and with a 21 month old son, and a wife that works on Saturday, I can't leave to go out state on an all day event. were you at autumn oaks this past week end? there was some people there who had cur dogs. they were parked in the field by the entrance near the horse arena. i spoke with these people they were very nice and informative. we were camped across the road by the arena.
i got single registration papers from ukc at oaks. and i have single registration papers from pkc. i think right now i will be registering my cur with both but mainly hunting pkc. they hold hunts closer to me.
thank you to everyone for the info.

yep, i recognized the name. he had some nice little curs there. tried to sell me one. seems everywhere i went at oaks someone was trying to sell me one. lol. but one is enough. mohawk is a fast, smart little dog with a lot of energy.
i do have one question about the single registration papers. where it says parents' name: i have no idea what mohawks sire and dam's names are. do i say unknown or make something up. i hate to make something up when i don't know.

Put unknown..little white lies have destroyed many pedigrees and lines of dogs. Better to be honest cuz the truth always comes out in the end.

Should have bought one...guy called me yesterday who bought one of each so I could listen to them tree.... Told him that's why we've been with this line almost 30 years.....

Actually we don't care if you buy a pup , just glad we had some available at the big hunt for a change.

Enjoy your dog! Good luck!
Amy

2 walkers and on right is leopard hound

Posted by patches on 09-11-2007 09:36 PM:

now that would be interesting indeed! i took my little cur to a ukc hound event last month. at our club after the regular swim races they run practice runs that anyone can join in. i put mohawk in and he showed them all how to go after a coon. there was a man there who had walkers. he was bragging about the tree barks of his one walker. well mohawk blew him away when he treed.
