What makes a reproducer????
I don't know how many times in the past that I have seen where a dog places in a larger hunt (A.O., World Hunts, etc.) and then all of the sudden the pups go from 200 or 300 dollars a pup to 500 on up. And I am mostly talking about females that before they placed in the hunt they might have 15 to 20 puppies and not as much as a show champion to show up with a title and just because they place in a larger hunt the puppies are some how going to make it now.. WHat do you guys think??

If it was a sin 2,000 years ago it is a sin today.
I believe its called price gouging
Seriously.... Everybody wants the next world champion. When a dog wins it, people are just hopeing that he/she is throwing the next champ. Alot of people will pay what it takes to take that chance.

good genes, when you can see the off spring doing what they are supposed to do the is a producer not winning a big hunt.and that goes back to the off spring now if they go out a win a big hunt, now you as a person looking to breed you should consider breeding to what made that dog.

Dang i hate to do this, but i gotta agree with Chrys.Price gouging is all it is.People will pay more money for that world champ pup or all grand pup when right in thier own back yard is a 150 dollar pup that could make the same dog.I think its called jumping on the band wagon or me tooing. To me a reproducer is a dog(male or female)that throws better dogs than he or she is consistantly. If you breed a female to two different studs and dont get coondogs....move on.My son has started comp. hunting and doing some winning,we've got four very well bred female and one male.He does'nt understand why i wont breed to my own male. The reason is because i dont know if our male will reproduce,so why not breed our good females to one that is proven, then if we are'nt sucessfull we ...........move on.jmo
p.s. Chrys those are some good looking pups you guys got,but your're still a pot stirrer!!!!!

Come on people drop you're ego and admitt you just got beat, made a bad call, dog made a mistake, what ever. You can't get cheated that much
Just a question
If a dog win's a big one, does it increase it's offsprings chances of doing the same? What do you all think...
It is called OVER-PRICING pups because of one or two wins. Everyone wants to have that next FAMOUS DOG, so the newbes run to the curent winner. They usually never consider all the factors like: Pedigree, style of hunting, location of hunting area, real training, what the dog was breed to, and a dozen other things that goes into a pup making a 'coondog'.
the only way it increases its odds are because "band wagoners" will buy more and give that pup more of a chance than a back yard "coondog" and i'm not taking away from either cross, but its the truth.I'm just as guilty,i hunt Black dogs and 10 years ago i had to have a pup out of the World champ, put a pup of my own on the back burner and wasted six months on a world champ,in the process my own young dog sit for six months and the world champ got hunted....end results were two dogs that were useless to me.once agian i'm not trying to knock anyone bloodlines, but i think we are all guilty of "metooing"

I think it's called, "Dont buy one, if you dont want one!" It's not price gouging. That pup is not a necessity. It is not food, water, or shelter.

My idea of what makes a good reproducer is a stud and dam that can consistantly out produce them selves as far as hunting abilities. I used to raise quarter horses and i found a few stud to breed my mares to that always threw colts that were better athletes then either the stud or the mare. To me this is what makes a worth while good reproducer. Striving to breed better dogs then what someone currently has wether they be comp dogs or pleasure dogs should be what its all about. Some stud dogs are capable of breeding any female and it seems they can produce good hunting dogs ,others seem to have to cross with certain lines to make good hunting dogs . Some great hunting dogs cant produce a dog worth more then a 22 bullet. l I think it pays to do your homework past litters off a stud or dam are a good example of what ya might get for pups. It pays to do your homework and up your odds of getting a good cross ..JMO dgarrett
Jerry, I agree with you to a point, I do understand your reasoning. But if your male dog has the traits your looking for in a dog how do you know that your not sitting on the best reproducing stud dog of all time unless you give him a try? I have a young male here that I absolutely love! I want pups like him in case something was to ever happen to him. Evidently a few other hunters liked what they saw in him also. He bred a real nice female six months ago and she had 7 beutiful pups. I did not want any money just two female pups. Other then one that got killed by coyoyes, all of them are already running and treeing! It was a gamble and way too early to tell but it looks like it might have paid off. Ive since booked two other females by guys that like what they have seen. I will not take any money all I want is a pup. If I end up with too many pups I'll sell a couple, I dont beleive I'll have any trouble. I think if you are really happy with what you have and thre arent no big holes in the dog, you just might be cutting yourself short by not trying him. Someone took a chance the first time on every great reproducer!

I have wondered this same thing for along time. What is it that sepperates the decent to good producers from the great ones?
For me it starts with a dog that consistently throws the kind of pup that people will put there time in. If they arent hunted, they dont stand much of a chance. You have to get them in the right hands.
Great producers like great performers are a genetic fluke. Like a 300 boone and crocket buck. Every once in a while the powers that be smile down on us and everything lines up in one package.
I hunt lines that have very high %'s of titled dogs. For the most part each indivigual dog isnt overpoweringly better than the rest of the "good" ones out there. There are however more of that kind in each litter.
That to me, is the difference. Knowing I have a 50/50 or 3 in 4 chance at a pup that is cappable of being in the winners circle. Not just make a dog that can tree a coon.
Larry, having great friends that hunt hard and enjoy the same breed has made more producers than than dog power.
