why are the top dogs from indiana.
have you ever gave it any thought most of the top name dogs and or there owners are from the hoosier state, why is it ??? is it we have more coons. is it we have better trainers. is it we have better breeding program. or is it we just hunt our dogs more than the rest of you ???? now i am not saying i have top dogs. whell maybe i do i have the best pot licker ever to look out a kennel door.. all jokeing a side why is it a lot of top coon dogs come from indiana,,,

More coons. I'll tell the truth. I wish i lived in Indiana. You want to train a puppy in Indiana? You just walk out your front door and train your puppy. You want a tune up a young dog and get em fired up? Knock out about 30 coons to them this week? hey, just walk out there and git r done. It makes sense to me. Down here in North Georgia, you turn a dog or pup loose in the woods and the first thing they have to do is make it past a herd of about 30 deer, then dodge the 15 possums and 12 armadillo's and 10 red fox, then, if they make it through the short pine thicket and actually get down to the dried up stream where there actually used to be water, they just might be one old boar coon feeding on that stream down there. Now your 1/2 mile from where you turned that pup loose. Training a puppy down here is not impossible but it's NOT EASY. So, like i said, I wish i lived up there in the land of many coons many nights.

I didn't know that they was from Indiana. I don't think the top hounds are limited to the demographics of Indiana

If it was a sin 2,000 years ago it is a sin today.
Part of it is simply location. Indiana is somewhat centrally located in the country so it is accessible for folks everywhere else to travel to. That makes it the "stud dog mecca". Lots of folks have hounds worthy of being promoted at stud but they're location limits the access. That's why often times folks from further out will find someone to stud they're hound in IN, OH & etc.
The hunting is good and coon are plentiful, that gives folks better conditions for training hounds and also because of the hunting and location the registrys often hold major events based out of IN.
Not sure what came first the "top name" IN dogs / owners or the major events, but when you can take a nice hound, put it in thick coon in your own backyard during major event that will help put you on the fast track to being "top name" simply because the rest of the country is sitting at home watching to see who has won what.
One thing I've learned, is that the quality of dogs is no different in IN that anywhere else. Some may be more well known but that doesn't neccessarily make them any better. You can't win if you don't enter, and when the major events are always in your backyard it sure makes it easier to enter opposed to someone that consistently has to drive 8, 10, 12 hours to attend a major event.
I don't agree with that at all. We have our share but no way I would say "most" are from Indiana.
i dont know jim , some of the best known dogs are here or came from here. this years world ch jess was from here, as was frosty bobo ,wild n blue pounder, northern blue levi, n b son. 100 proof rat, all of gayle flowers stock , big river jess singing top grizley, dohoneys dizzy , bellars pac man , psycho . jerry molls dogs larry meeks dogs . wld ch patoka lake boz, boyeds little joe . little joe jr. just to name a few of top of my head.

I do not beleive it matters what State you are from MOP is huntting a dog is what makes the best, if you keep a dog in the woods you will make a great dog if you hunt a dog every now and then you will have a good dog if you do not hunt them you will have nothing .
huntting them hard and gunning over them and anyone can have the best.

Sheep you ever hunted in Indiana??? You need to get off the T!t and get out of Georgia and see the lands of many coon.lol If all you have to worry about are 30 deer, 15 opossums, and ten fox you got it made.lol
If the coon are plentiful so are everything else remember that the temptation is great in the land of many coon.
I thought Strickland/ Vogel and JC Ellis had done the most winning in the last few years. Are they from Indiana?

Who are you kidding? The best hounds are from NH. 1 coon every 10 square miles..takes a coondog to tree one during a New Hampshire winter when it's 5 below with 2 feet of snow! LOL

One thing that makes a difference,
is DRIVING TIME TO MAJOR EVENTS. I'm not saying it's the only reason, but there is a difference when you only have to drive a couple of Hours to a RQE, Zone, or World hunt. Compare that to having to drive 4-5 hours to an RQE, 6-8 hours to a Zone, & 15 hours or more to the World hunt. I'll bet your young BUTT wouldn't be making many of those trips, just like alot of the good dog owners out west, down south, & up in the northeast don't/won't do.
I know that when I still lived out in Oklahoma, we sort of felt OSTRASIZED when it came to the World Hunt & they were still throwing us a BONE every few years by holding the World Hunt out that way. One year I even got a WILD HAIR to hunt at the WINTER CLASSIC. I left by myself, when school got out on a Fri. evening, after an 18-19 hour drive I got there. That night I hunted in Florida, got a couple a hours of sleep & took out back for Oklahoma. I had to be at school at 7:00 the next morning, & I made it as far as Clarksville, Ark. & had to pull over & get a little sleep. Needless to say I didn't make it to school on time the next morning.
The biggest hunts out that way is Ada Walker Days & the Texas State Championship. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that alot of good dogs never make it to the larger Hunts back east, because of the driving distance. There were quite a few guys that I knew out there that wouldn't even, go to a RQE/Zone with their dogs because they were not going to drive all over to try an get quilified for the World Hunt, & it wasn't because their dogs were not good enough.
Marv ought to know the answer to this question, & that is in the last 35 years how many of Russ Bellers dogs were breed, raised, trained & hunted by Russ in Indiana.
