White River refuge/ Maddox Bay cabins

Have any of you guys hunted the refuge and/ or stayed at these cabins? We have a trip planned for the last of the month. How's the hunting down there?

I went last year for first time. The open timber and flat walking is awesome. The coon population wasnt as thick as what I figured it would be. Tree just as many coon at house but it was blast to just camp with buddies and hunt all night for week. Was pretty crowded with lots hounds until bout midnight.

H.L the coon population is not what it used to be. The guys that know where to go still tree a pile of them. The spots everyone can easily get to are worn out. Flooding in the spring before the kittens were old enough to get out of the dens killed off the kittens. A few years of that and it is hurting the population tremendously. It used to flood every other winter and not in the spring. So the south unit was only hunted 15 days every 2 years. This year the water stayed in there all summer.

It's an experience everyone should try. You will have a lot more fun with a group of friends for sure.

Like almost everything else the WWR is not what it used to be back in the "good Ol days". They went 150 years without touching it and now they are cutting timber off it. They have one cypress tree that is 1,000 yrs old.

I hate to see that timber cut. They cut close to the road so it looks like there is a lot more cut then there actually is. Although we hate to see it it does improve the timber for the wildlife if done correctly. The old growth parts of the timber just doesn't have a whole lot of food source other than acorns and thats just a short time out of the year. Hack berry, grapes, bugs and fishing is about the only other thing because its all shaded out. Its enough for a great coon population, but the rest of the animals all live toward the edges of the refuge.

Disapointed

You may or may not be disappointed in the coon population BUT not in the woods huge timber and vast with PLENTY of WATER. Hope U have a wonderful time I did.
BETTER check dates though the wardens don't play different dates for different locations.

H.L. We hunted the south part last year and had a good time temps dropped to the teens and the coons laid up but we still treed our share. I like going just to see flat Woods! lol
We are Ridge runners up here in Northwest Ga.

yeser

Hunted in both locations and nothing like HOME but U are correct whose woods are a lot easier on a old man than those woods where u live. BUT yawl get along up there a lot better than we do in these flat woods. Cut over verses ridges well a tossup i guess. Hope yawl have a great time.

Hunted there last year. Opening night on treed 5 or 6. The next night I found my way around and we had 13 singles in just over 3 hours. Beats the heck out of 1 or 2 a night in Tennessee.
