Bench showing

How do y'all get your pups to keep their heads up when training them to bench show I got feet down just need help with his head

Repetition over and over ...

Hold the muzzle firm and even give it a little shake with a firm No! After they start doing it right for even a few seconds, reward them. After they get real good at it, I have someone walk around like a judge and touch them, open their mouth and check their teeth like a judge. Play a radio in the back ground. Have someone slam a tailgate and keep the repetition cycle going again. All these things will happen at a show.

Do the same thing about showing indoors. Every new change will mess them up in competition.
Had a recent show in door with 5 champions.
All 4 of the others acted like they had never been on a bench. I won because I had practiced indoors many many times with lots of noise. Hope this helps.

thanks I'll have to do that next time I practice with him I also forgot to ask how you get them to keep there tail up

Some will and some want in my experience...

But I usually curl it and tap it right in the curve while giving a low tone of the word whoa or whatever word you want to let them know to be still. Same as above, over and over. I bet I go through a hundred repetition of every move I want from them between the ages of 4 to 6 mo. Old. I try to have mine competitive by they reach the age of 6 mo. When they are eligible to show.

That's where I tap it and talk to him.
He may want to turn his head and look at you, but give his muzzle a little tougher shake and use your NO. Command.

Most train differently, but some things we all do a little of the same training technics.

Like these individuals said, repetition is key Continuously correct the head. First time the dog holds still for a matter of a second or two. Praise the dog. Do this a few times and then turn that second or two into 5 or 6 seconds. Praise them when they do right. Quick and firm is usually a very good correction method, but remember that all dogs are different and some don't respond well to quick and firm corrections. Especially when it involves their head. Try a few different things. If a dog is REALLY stubborn, I will hold the muzzle and watch their head very close. I'll nudge and tell them to "hold it" if I notice their eyes begin to wander and they are losing their focus. From there, as the dog progresses, I begin to loosen the grip, then lower the hand a little, then completely pull the hand away all together. When you go to a show and see someone with a dog that stands well for them, ask them about it. It's much easier for someone to get their hands on your dog to figure out what works best and then tell you. Attending your state event is always a good place to find a good handler to teach you. I know of a couple in PA. I can think of at least 10 different methods just off the top of my head for teaching a dog to hold its head still, but it all depends on which methods the dog responds to best. This is all great advice, but also remember to pull the dog off the bench and come back to it later if you begin to get frustrated when they aren't cooperating.

Depends on the dog. Works best with one that is being plain stubborn. Get them set up and every time they move their head gently 'touch' them under the chin.
