Setting compass to come out of the woods.

How exactly do you set a compass to come out of the woods when going to the tree. I've always used my Garmin or just known the way.

I always go in one direction and come out 180 degrees from that.

My compass has an arrow on one side. When I get ready to go in I point the arrow to the way I want to come out. Then I turn the dial until the N (North) is lined up with the red pointer indicating north. When I get to the tree and am ready to leave, I turn the whole compass until the red indicator lines up with the N and follow the arrow back out. I always use a compass as my primary means to come out and occasionally look at the gamin for reference.

Some fast Army training look at your compass if it's LESS than 180° you add 180°. If MORE than 180° you subtract 180°. Bring you back within 10 feet. For example you go in at 200° and come back out at 20°. Keep your self lined up at 20° at all times.

I always look on a map of the area and see which general direction the nearest road or other long landmark is, such as a pipeline, power line or body of water. If for example it runs north and south and I am hunting on the left side of it I know to head east to hit it for easier walking. This way I don't have to stare at the compass to stay on the exact degree track all the way out of the woods...it don't bring me to the tailgate of the truck when I step out of the woods, but I have never gotten lost in 40 years.
Now, all this is considering that we don't have big woods here. Most tracks of land are 200 acres or less. If I was hunting big woods like the Jefferson National Forest I would be using the degree track method as posted above. Those woods are big and if I got in there deep and missed a few degrees I could end up in West Virginia.

That's how I learned to do it and it works great if you go in and come right out. We hunt big woods and cut several times in the same block. A person just has to remember the different directions he took and come back out as close as you can. It's easier in the hills where there are ridges to follow but we hunt in big flat woods that all look the same. Say you go N then NW then W, when you come out you come out SE.

You keep in a straight line. If you curve move and get a few degrees off at let's say a mile a few degrees is a lot. Pick some thing out in the distance and shoot your azmiuth and that will get you closer.

Back in 1986 I did one of the toughest courses I had ever seen. Fort Sherman Panama. We did 45 days of jungle warfare training. Was awesome. Being in the USMC gave me more opportunities than you could expect. I can say this, I will never get lost.
