Kennel manners?

What's your thoughts on kennel manners?Such as stepping in there crap.Do you believe that a pup can learn this as it matures.Or is a pup just born with enough brains to know better?

Depends what it is. Some is genetics, some is learned. Some is a mixture of both. I got one here now that left to its own devices would be an idiot about pen pacing. It was getting worse fast. A month of zero tolerance for it anytime I see it has the dog acting like a normal dog all except feeding time, then it comes back.

Only my experience. Most kennel idiots are idiots in woods or do nothing. I used term most meaning most that I have dealt with. Exceptions to everything

I had some that would make a mess out of the kennel running threw it when they were young but as they got a little older it wasn't a problem even though they were still hyper.

Some truth to that, but again depends what it is and what's causing it. This dog I mentioned is a young dog and likes to have something to do. Along with letting it know in no uncertain terms excited pacing wont be tolerated, putting it where it can dig, and throwing a piece of round wood ash to it every couple of days to peel the bark off of and carry around has done wonders. The dog has 1 hole dug you could probably hide Jimmy Hoffa in, lol. But beats pen pacing any day of the week.

I've culled several for being an aggrivation around the house . Say you hunt one 4 hours a night everynight. That leaves 20 hours a day7 days a week you live with it around your home. I'll only tolerate so much. Most I've seen that i couldn't put up with were also too stupid to make a top dog anyway

That's why I try to figure out a way to fix some things if I can, because otherwise there's only 1 alternative. I can think of 3 or 4 things I absolutely can't tolerate. Constant pacing is right up there....for both me and the other dogs here.

I'm not convinced that a dog that isn't stopped from pacing isn't put at a handicap. In other words the lower probability of a dog that paces acting right in the woods is at least partially the result of pacing, not necessarily a confirmation of the dog being "born" an idiot.

A dog that paces constantly ends up stressed both physically and mentally. Sometimes at high levels. Stands to reason that will negatively affect a good portion of them. I know it does me. Lol.

I think compulsive pacing, barking, digging and aggression are all the result of amaturish breeding. Most folks are looking for a better hunting dog with little to no concern for or thought given to kennel manners. It's all about first strike, chop track, bawl tree etc. I've got a dog now that full of prey drive but she will try to kill any and every other dog. She must be separated and confined to protect the other dogs. I know now that her sire is the source but it's too late now. But she'll live out her life here and be given the best care possible because it ain't her fault.

How you come up with a dog digging is a result of amateur breeding?

Some of what you listed can be directly related to breeding......the dog comes pre dis-positioned to that behavior. Other times in the case of pacing or barking it might be just a typical high energy pup that learns some bad habits.

But digging is not any of that. Digging is about as natural an act for a dog as smelling each other or lapping up water with their tongue. Left to be a dog and not put up in a concrete kennel, they all will do it to a certain degree in their free time.

No, they don't. When they dig too much it's called bad kennel manners. When they bark too much it's called bad kennel manners. I believe such behavior can be attributed to careless breeding or jus breeding for one trait.

I don't know what you consider digging to much, but if you put three dogs under 2 together in an enclosed area with a mound of ground, at some point the dirt will be flying from all 3 of them.

Any and every young dog put on ground and not on concrete is going to spend some time digging after they discover how fun it is. It's entirely normal and healthy dog behavior. Either that or every farm dog and hunting dog in the last 40 yrs I've owned has been a result of careless breeding. But I doubt that because if you read up on wolves they are intense diggers.

I think I'm going to start breeding for kennel manners .. I have to like a dog at home before I like it in the woods , But but . I have had a couple idiots at home the was natural born coon dogs . its a whole lot easier to teach kennel manners than to be a coon dog ,

I'm not sure you can teach one not to step in its crap.Ive had 1 litter born at my house.From day they started walking.They would go in the corner away from there house and feed to crap.I think it all comes down to what's between there ears.With all the retarded dogs running around I don't think many are breeding for brains.JMO

just like not all dogs suit the same people in the woods not all suit in the kennel. i have some above ground pens and they don't work as well if they don't walk on it!
