break away collar

I've been thinking about dogs that die because of their collar getting stuck. I wonder why we can't have some kind of a break away collar. collars could be rated for weight classes. each size dog would have a weight rating that would allow the dog to break the collar off by hanging its own weight on the collar. I think it would be worth it to someone to develop one. Your thoughts?

What about tieing them at the tree? That's when my hounds pull the hardest.

We could have used that Sunday night with Jetta. I hope someone can come up with a great idea like this and make it happen! Won't bring my Jetta back but could help save some dogs.

no one would have to use a break away collar. but if you wanted to, and you want to tie you dog at the tree, just use a quick connect collar on the end of your lead. Or one could use a choke collar that has a stop to limit how tight the collar could get.
on the other hand, I don't know how one could manage to do anything with three collar on a dog, or even two unless every collar was made to be break away.

Something else I have seen is when a dog is tied up at the tree, and they get to pulling real hard, they can damage there vocal chords. I think using a harness, or a protective broad proof vets with a built in harness, would be a more practical solution. Not sure but I have also wondered about this.

They make something like what you're talking about now. They have have the plastic clips on the collar.

I wont even run those plastic snap collars on my house dogs they pop off like nothing, if you have a decent size dog and tie it out on a lead and he runs to the end the collar is coming off

I wouldn't put anything different on my dog if I had it in a controlled situation, like being tethered at home. The problem I'm talking about here is when a dog, wearing a regular collar is hunting and get hung.
I think a simple elastic piece sawed into the collar would do the trick. The elastic would keep the collar secure but would allow the collar to slip off if the dog is hung. It would work too if the dog is tied at the tree because the dog typically pulled against the collar, not backwards as he would if hung.

Why would at home be any different a chained dog can hang himself on his house ive seen it happen before and i would guess some have been hung in a lot of different ways at home.
Its bad to lose a dog by it getting hung but you have to look at all the dogs that are in the woods and some wearing 3 collars and the % that make it home verses the % that dont and i dont think a break-a-way collar could be built that would work without other problems arising because when he runs by something and snags the collar you have a dog running around without a name plate collar or training collar or tracking collar or maybe all of them and if you cant track back to find them thats more problems and could be a bunch of money to replace and you may still lose your dog and be no better off.

It's clearly a decision each hunter would have to make, if there were ever such a thing as a break away collar.

I have been thinking about this for my hounds since hearing about dbaker17's accident last week, and then all the comments that followed describing similar instances.

There are several kinds out there, but i can't imagine any of them would work for coonhunting. These dogs crawl under branches, through briars, etc etc and i could bet with a breakaway collar, they would shed the collars in a matter of minutes.

Here are the options though, that ive seen.

http://www.petsmart.com/dog/collars...36-catid-100081

^ this one you could actually tie the dog to a tree with, it has two d-rings and you have to use both, and it bypasses the breakaway feature. Pretty ingenious, but with that dinky plastic clip, the first briar patch would rip that collar right off.

This one looks like it might have some potential:

http://www.petexpertise.com/dog-col...og-collars.html

^ it stretches, to provide a better chance of escape for the dog, but still has the two d rings, so you could tie to a tree.

Another idea that I have, would be what about some kind of harness, that would evenly distribute the weight. Where maybe if the dog is hug, his shoulders keep him from choking?

Something else i thought of, similar to the elastic piece idea that croatankid described, (which is like the 2nd collar i posted) would be what about stitching in some extra collar, that would take a good amount of force to rip free, but when it rips free, the collar gets loose.

I am looking at a harness and lanyard (for work) that I have, and if you've ever seen one, the lanyards have a suspension to absorb shock if you were to actually have a fall. Once you fall, the lanyard gets to a point where your weight rips through the stitching, and an extra couple feet of the lanyard stretches, just to prevent your body from being shocked.

I think that would be easy enough to use on a dog collar, it would add some bulk, but would also stand up to being drug though briars and small snags.

I was thinking an elastic piece, sewn into the collar but the two collar ends each would have a D ring that a lead could be attached. in that condition, the collar would not separate.
Also, do we need three collars? I've started putting my ID plate onto my tracking collar. So, in most cases, one would have only one collar and still, the stretchable collar could be part of the Garmin and anyother collar. Anyone could experiment to determine the elastic material and number of stetches, etc.,

I have a light collar a garmin collar and a tie up collar. Im gonna work on getting my light collar to be my tie up collar. Sucks cuz those sport dog lights are a bitch to fit on anything but those e collars. Kinda dumb.

The garmin collars are really heavy duty and hard to work with. I dunno.
