How to make pup sit down and tree?

I have a nice 11 month old coming on good. He is striking good and running good on track. When I hunt him a lone he never sits down and tree and with my old dog when she finally trees he will just keep circling and keep his nose on the ground and every once in a while rare up on tree. Just wondering if anyone else have seen this and what to do to get him to stay at the tree. I have use caged coons with him and he still does the same thing. He will tree good with the coon in a cage tied up in a tree, but when I turn it loose and let him try to tree it he does the same thing.

For clarification;
Are you letting him tree on the caged coon, pulling him off then turning the coon loose to run and tree?

if your showing him cage coon alot you hindering him more than your helping to many cage coons can mess a pup up jmo couple shold be enough you need to hunt it with a good tree dog and ty it up at the tree not let it mill around the more you let it mill around the tree worse it will get and will always mill if not corrected

Sometime when young dog comes off tree I ty them back bout 50 yard for 5 or 10 minutes. Just where they can hear all the excitement at tree with other dogs treeing and just barely see lights shining and what's goin on. And when pup gets really excited I cut him loose and most time they will get on tree to. Then i pet him up little bit. But if he comes off I ty him back again but don't let him loose again. He only gets one chance on each tree. If he keeps coming off tree I might ty him back for 3 or 4 trees straight every time he comes off . And not every let him get back on tree. Just pick him up on way out. Pretty soon he will figure out if he comes off tree he goin get tied back away from tree and miss all the excitment. Don't know if I explained it right but it works for me most the time.

with the caged coon he is treeing by sight. He is milling around because he can't see a coon in a cage. Don't show him anymore caged coon, ty him up when the other dogs are treeing he will figure out to tree on scent after awhile.

The answer is simple, he is not ready to tree yet. He is in a running phase, he doesnt want to tree with the female, probably going to be very independent. If he will hunt by himself that would be the only way I would hunt him.. He will run a track, locate a tree .. Then be off running again several times a night, until that time he locates and stays. Then you have something.

Tie him up. Give him a little fur. I've had luck tieing them up where there paws are off the ground a little if u can. U can also tie him at base of tree with a half hitch around his body. This will keep them from jumping around and running the base. I suggest walking him in this manner before tieing him to a tree. I get them to treeing when I get there and let him tree for 5 or 10 while u shine. Try to help ya

Well Jmiller, let me first say what you are seeing is typical of the average pup. Don't get to excited either way just yet. I would hunt him a night or two with the old dog and then maybe drop him by himself once in awhile. Just keep plugging along this way until the leaves drop off and kill season comes in. This is when you have the best opportunity to address your issue.

When the leaves get off, with season in, when the older dog trees a coon where you have a small sapling to tie your pup to (ON the back side of the tree) This is important to tie your pup on the back side. (opposite side of the old dog) and close enough to the tree that the pup can gets its feet on the tree.

Now start shooting that coon in the legs and start squalling like a wild man. In a bit you should see that coon start walking down the tree. Now why I told you to tie your pup on the back side is that when the coon gets about 10-20 feet from the ground, it will flip on the back side of the tree to come the rest of the way down. When that coon gets between 5-10 feet from the ground, keep your light on the ground, run in and get your pup to look up that tree. Now put your light on that coon and hopefully the pup will see it. The coon will either come on down for the fight or it will turn and run back up the tree. Either way, when the pup sees it it should fire up. If the pup sees the coon go back up the tree and starts pounding, let him pound for about 1 minute or less and then step back and shoot it out dead. If that coon doesn't run back up the tree it will jump out and the fight will be on. Either way that pup will soon realizes those coon are up that tree and will start looking for that coon to come walking down and will in turn start treeing its danged fool head off. It might take a while but after about 4-5 walking down it will get the idea to start looking for coons in the trees.

every body has thier own opion no way would i shoot a coon that is not dead exspecialy not to a pup sure way to ruin him i don't want my dogs tore up but this is jmo
