How would you diagnose this? With Picture

She was fine Thursday of last week and then I checked her Sunday morning and found this on her. She appears to have lost all the hair on the patch on one of her shoulders and it looks real dry and crusty. I dont think this is due to any physical damage such as scratching or itching but it could be.

I have no idea what it could be and was thinking about putting lip balm on it to to prevent it from being so dry.

Any ideas on what it could be and how to treat it?

One of the guys I hunt with had a 10 week old puppy get sores like that. He had got a 5year old dog in Iowa and he also got them before the pup did. Took them to the vet and was told that it was a parasite and gave him some pills and salve, cleared them both up in a few days.

Looks like ringworm/fungal infection... I'd just wipe it with vinegar a couple of times a day or you can get athletes foot cream.

Tractor supply carries a fungal spray. It covers ring worm, fungus' and girth itch etc. I believe it might help if u don't feel a trip to the vet is needed and its not costly.

Nu-Stock

I use this stuff on our horses and dogs and swear by it.

Look it up and read what all it can be used to treat.

I had a redbone get that same thing. Skin looks black and crusty. Put happy jack mange medicine on it for a week and took care of it. Stayed black for a while but then he grew hair back good as new.

nu-stock works. that does look like ring worms. I use half bleach and half iodine, clears it up in a few days

Here is a little neat trick I learned while in College and we use it everytime we need to now!
If you suspect ringworm and a trip to the vet isn't available.
Get yourself a Black light. Yep like the ones your kids have take the dog to a dark room. Turn it on over the spot. If it's ring worm it will glow a yellowish color!

Be careful when treating these kind of spots. If you treat it as fungal and it is staph or any kind of bacteria or Vice Versa it make it worse. Just think of it as trying to kill a grizzly bear with a 22 rifle. It just gets more aggresive and in this case immune to products and spreads.

To me that just looks like a pressure sore from not enough bedding!
Take care and Happy Hunting

Vetricin (sp?) will clear it up in no time. It can be used to cute all kinds of things. Great stuff.

It might be the dog food you feed them some dogs are allergic to certain types like corn based diamond lamb meal is a good dog food to try for that

The best way to cure ringworm is with 7% iodine found at the farm stores. Soak a rag in warm water, soften the lesion and scrape it off. Apply the iodine and rub it into the lesion. Do this each day until lesion dries up. I've used this countless times on dogs over the years and simply put, it works.

I noticed the same thing on one of my dogs. I started powdering my dogs down with Sevin Dust for the ticks that have gotten really bad in some of the area here. The spots have healed up and the hair is growing back in a matter of a few days.
