Hounds that get deep question

I've got a walker pup. He's not quite 7 months old, and trackman blooded. I've been trying to go by John Wicks books. When I take him for a short walk down at the creek, he gets about 40 yards or so out. What I'm wondering is, these hounds that grow up to be dogs that get deep, how far do they go at 7 months? Surely they get deeper as they get older and started, right? Thanks guys.

They all different. Some will go and go at 7 months. I've seen it this summer.

I wouldn't worry about it yet . You don't want a pup going deep young . When a pup is 700 yards or more in there , no way can you tell that pup is doing or can you correct him if he is deep . Plain and simple they have to Learn and tree them close before I want them to go far

Pups that start out going deep deep at a young age are harder to train

Well that makes perfect sense, and makes me feel better. A guy told me there are no get deep dogs, that they are made to hunt deep. Is this right, and if so, how in the world to I train a dog to get gone and find a coon?

I wouldn't say you got a potlicker. I said some. Matter of fact it was a whole litter pretty much. Personally on my next pup. I may not even fool with it period other than leading and loading until its a yr old. They are bred with drive in em to find game. Which makes em want it. Some more than others. Not all will hunt deep. It just comes to most of them. You can't train it in there.

Some young dogs hunt deep from the word go but most will start going deeper when they start.Then some dogs never go deep.Most places a dog don't need to go over 500 yards to tree a coon anyway.So deep is not always good.Jmo

You can't teach hunt or desire. That is something a dog is born with. The good thing is your dog is only 7 months old, and has plenty of time to mature and start to hunt, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I personally think people put to much pressure on pups now a days, thinking that they ought to be running and treeing their own coon at 6 months of age. In reality only a few pups actually start that young. A lot of hunters think just because their pup goes with other dogs, that they are ACTUALLY GOING hunting, when in fact they are just following/chasing the other dogs. You also see a lot of video's of pups now a days treeing at a very young age, but most of the time their on a hang up or a coon that they have hissed them up on. Pictures and video's DON'T ALWAYS TELL THE WHOLE STORY, so don't believe everything you SEE.

It's good your trying to start your pup by himself, IMO that will benefit him more then anything, as he will learn it himself. Be patient, and remember that he's just a PUPPY, he will let you know when he's ready. Keep him excited, discipline him when needed, reward him ONLY when he does right, and QUALITY is always better then quantity. Best of luck!!

This is some good info. tganks everyone. Please keep in mind that by using wicks book, he wants you to wait till they're 10 months old or so before starting. He's not started, he's just a pup snooping around a creek. I was wondering how far these get deep dogs explore around as unstarted pups. For a dog to go 500 yards as an adult, does it need to kick sand in your eye as an unstarted puppy, is what I'm asking I guess. ALONE. By theirself.

I personally like what I call a busy dog , meaning I like them smelling , winding and hunting for a coon as soon I get them out of the truck (or before) . No need for deep if they don't have to but that depends on where you're hunting and sometimes if their moving .
