beagleman01- at little about justin and hunting he hunts as hard or harder than most. I have sent dogs to justin to have him straighten them out for me and when i got them back they where and i have sent him dogs to just hunt for me and he did. yes justin has alot of things to say and yes alot of people don't won't to here him but one thing is for sure justin has coondogs and knows what a coondog is supposed to be.

I didn't mention titles ... but in the wake of everyone wanting to see B&T's win or win people over ... just curious what % have a dog with a couple seasons under it's belt and devoted purely to the task .. whether it's hauling to the hunts or just impressing the locals .. hard to promote the dogs for hunting , if the good ones are all busy training pups or breeding or sharing the dog box with two other hounds for their one or two dumps of the night.

That process is essential before breeding or trying to hit the road and win ... there's not much difference in the serious pleasure hunter , competition hunter or breeder ... no shorcuts to success in whatever form you measure it .

Ron , I can change a diaper with one hand ... make a bottle with the other and have a three course meal on the stove cooking at the same time ... thanks for asking , she's just about the cutest thing I ever seen and I made her on the first try ! lol

Thanks , Shawn .. I'm humbled .. you know it's just everyday life for us .. get up early and work , hunt and pester folks if we wanna .. never knew it was a big deal ... and funny that anyone would take issue with posting on a message board ... like the old lady staring at the window mad because cars and driving down the county road in front of her house ... like they outta find some other place to drive than the road .

It's an honest question and it may sting ... but the subject is the bare bones of improving the breed .

My hats off to Cobles and Stocking ... they bred some good dogs , hit the woods , don't live cover and do their part ... whether you hit the hunts or just hunt hard ... that kind of commitment and insight will help everyone .

Just consider what the average age B&T's start getting studded out and taken out of serious hunting shape .. mentally and physically ... same for gyps.

That alone as a whole will tell you where the breed stands competitively .. pleasure hunting or nite hunting...

The Cobles and Lee have done a great job in the hunts and they do hunt hard and its paying off. At least I think so, but they DO LIVE cover with Troubles. I just breed a female to him natural. Which I'm glad they did.

Yes to both except the pup raising part. The true test if a young dog is ready to show is, if you can hunt with pups and they don't dummy down than their ready to show. Like you stated about the physical and mental parts of a dog. Hunting a young dog with a pup gives me the chance to work the mental aspects of a dog. I've have seen some nice dogs fall apart when lined up with some knott-head. Nothing makes my madder than to watch a dog play the monkey see monkey do game.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a post that we could kick around training idea without somebody starting a pissing match.

Posted by Dirtdevil on 08-07-2013 11:49 PM:

I do hear ya' there ... some dogs think they need to help train pups to a fault , some fall in with a pup doing wrong ... most folks call it smart when a dog tries to help .

The female I hunt now is actually a better pup trainer because she don't care what a pup does ... she's gonna do her thing , aint gonna trash and the pup aint gonna mess her up .... and now that you said it , in a few areas she's a cut above .

I guess I never owned up to it like that ... but do agree on certain Litmus tests that I need to see a pups grow.

In between!

I've got the old man, he's coming 9 yo in Nov. He's about at the end of his competition road, he still has a lot of go in him but these younger hounds are hard to handle sometimes. He has pretty much been used for breeding here of late. Then, I have one that just turnt 2 yo that I've just about got ready to start hitting the hunts, that'll start this fall. I still use the old man to check this young dog with from time to time!

HEY LLOYD AND JUSTIN

I AGREE WITH YOU LLOYD IF WE COULD START A TRAINING POST ,ID BET THERE COULD BE SOME GOOD IDEAS COME FROM A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE.AGAIN GUYS IT WOULDNT BE WORTH IT IF A BUNCH OF ARGUEING STARTS .WERE ALL GROWN MEN HERE ,WHY CANT WE DO THIS WITH NO NEGATIVE REMARKS NOTHIN BUT POSITIVE ATTITUDES ,,MAN ID BET IT WOULD BE GOOD SAME WAY WITH A BREEDING POST... SOME GOOD THINGS COULD COME OF IT AND WE WOULD BE SURPRIZED THE STRIDES THAT COULD BE MADE IN THE BREED ,,,HAVE A BLESSED ONE ,,,FROM THE RIVERBOTTOM ,,,RON

I'm with ya' , Ron .. that's the funnest part to me .. and seems like more and more of the old wisdom is being lost ... not many folks live the life and have the experiences that the greatest generation did ... our dogs are not part of our lifestyle anymore and we are missing out on really being dogmen .. it's just point and shoot type stuff on the weekends and then put them back in the kennel and go back to work .

.....

A guy once told me if I want to be successful in anything it pays to be a better listener than a talker (not sure why he told me that. Lol). I enjoy reading well meaning post about what works for them when working dogs.
We have a valuable asset at our fingers in this message board if we could just put it to good use. You think we dare try to have a post that its ok to have different views and keep it moving in positive direction. I know for fact that we have some outstanding dog men in our breed and i would love to hear from them.
Sorry dirtdevil did mean to get off course on your post.
