hunting style?

I see guys on here that say tree jacking and chewing aren't inherited traits that they come from training or lack there of.While i'm not sure if i think thats always the case or not i was wondering about hunting style.Do you think it's inherited trait or a training style?I have seen pups from the same litter that one was brought up always hunting alone and fires in the country hard every drop, the other was trained using an old dog that just eased away and thats how the pup hunts.Just wanted expert opinions.

Jacking and chewing most def are inherited traits and most you can slow but most will never get it out completely !!! Now you as a trainer def can cause for these traits to come out sooner are progress a lot faster then normal but it's just like tracking, desire, heart, mouth and style they all are genetic and they are what they are!! Your not going to make a chop mouth track dog start bawling on track' a good trainer first puts the time in pups they need to develop and secondly knows when and when not to perform adjustments on the dog to optimize there performance ! There's no magic wand it is genetics and time and patience giving them the optimal chance available! The sad thing is 95% of pups today never get that chance

I think it's a little of both, natural inherited ability & training. Just like any other athlete their natural ability needs to be harnessed and supported by training.
As far as the tree jacking & vine pulling goes I'll say this. The hound I'm hunting now is 2 1/2 yrs old. As a small pup ( 3 months to a year old ) he sat at the bottom of the tree with his head throwed back. My personal preferred tree style. Then at a year old I started helping a few people out by taking & putting him with their un-started dogs to help get them started. I beleive I showed him to many caged ones after he didn't need it try'n to get other dogs pumped up. Now he jumps on occasion at the tree but when he's 100% sure the coons there he'll pull vines etc. Although his sire will chew vines to on occasion I think I actually caused it in my dog.

So do you think there is an age when it is to late to train to an inherited trait?Like with hunting style can you teach a 4 yr old thats off two hard hunters how to go hunting?

No you can't make him stand somewhere else but you aren't gonna make him go if it's not in him!does he go with other dogs hard and just not go by hisself?are does he just not hunt. Hard period? If he Is just not hunting hard with or without co at 4 years old I would move him on,if he hunts fine with other dogs just not alone there are some things you can try but the old saying can't teach an old dog new tricks well. He's got all the heart and desire he is going to have

chewing is an excitement level......they are there to stay

if you ask some anything a dog does is an inherited trait... to others its a training trait... I quit long time ago trying to figure it out and just try to train what I got to work with... they say you cant stop tree jacking... if you are willing to put in the time you can... I have never had one I could not make go hunting... I may not make her tonight but before its over they would go...was it inherited and they just figured it out or did I make them go... you tell me, its all an opinion... I have never been able to speed one up but I actually like one that hunts slower than most so hasn't been a problem... its when they strike I want them clicking it off...

Huntign Style

I think that comes down to a little of both inherited and trained.

I also think its both, as well as a young dog thing. I have one that as a 12 month old, he facebarked, tree jacked and chewed but now at 24 months he only chews. He doesn't always chew but if he does, its there, I've only seen him do it once in the last year or so but I bet I've overlooked it a few times. This is also a dog that I only hunted with other digs 4-6 times and the first 3-5times were from 4-6 months, then the last time was at 11 months. I also never had to break him off of anything (but he still likes our house cats during the day, mostly I think its just cuz he can't have them). This dog has literally had NO TRAINING, as far as hunting goes (in my opinion). All I have done is take him.

So was it trained? Inherited? Or a puppy thing?

I believe you train to sit, come here, etc,,,, you can take some tree out of a dog but I don't believe you can't put tree in one!!! And a dogs hunting ability is a trait that it is born with if it doesn't have the desire to run to catch your not going to make it! Most all of today's hounds will run and tree coon to some degree I have started 14 in the last 7 years and all would tree coon but none are eating my food mostly due to lack of desire to hunt hard and wide and the others I didn't like there mouth! In which got all a new address!!!I do believe you can shorten a hard going dog up as I have done it but I'm not switching a dog to go if I have to beat them I don't need them cause they are lazy

Posted by justus on 07-01-2013 09:07 PM:

I don't think just cause you haft to switch a dog to go says there lazy. A few of mine would go couple hundred yards by thereself and come back . After few nites of droping and switchin they will leave the earth. A dog thats lazy no going to go miles and i mean miles by thereslef thats lazy. Where I live in thin thin thin coons if your dog won't go 900+ your most likely not going to strike anything. A dog that won't hunt is worthless to me.

hunting style = inherited trait

When I was younger I played a lot of basketball! Was it because of a lack of training or talent that I did not make it to the NBA? I can not even begin to imagine all the basketballs I watched MJ & Majic dunk, why was I never able to dunk one?
A lot of things can be taught and tweaked and sure a dogs hunting style can be adjusted somewhat but there is no way any dog can be taught to hunt a certain way. As was mentioned above, all we can do is nurture their god given ability.

Posted by POTOMAC on 07-02-2013 12:50 PM:

Although most pups are marked by there sire and dam somewhat but there're the exceptions to the rule and your pup could be marked by any one of the first 15 dogs on either side give are take! There's no guarantee about anything when it comes to breeding dogs!!!!!it's the luck of the draw and a crap shoot!

i agree with a post from above. You can train a dog to sit, stay, roll over, play dead, house break, and learn to load and ride, BUT you can not train a dog to tree. You may get them to bark at a tree, but treeing is an instinct. They either have it or they dont. YES a trainer must help bring out the natural instinct, but they can not put tree in a dog. I will always stand on this, Tree dogs are born not made. And I have seen some from the best tree dog parents in the world and not have the tree in them.

It's no different than human siblings, their not all the same but yet have the same genetics. How many brothers or sisters do you know that we're raised by the same parents with the same rules in the same house but yet turned out totally opposite.
