Help please

Hello everyone, I am new to coon hunting. I have recently bought a 5 year old english male dog and having a problem with him not staying on a tree. The guy i got him from has not hunted but maybe 20 times in the last two years. My queston is will the dog come out of it or is it a waste of time. I hunted with him about three years ago and he was a good dog then.

Being that old idk when you seen him three years ago was it with other dogs or by himself? From what I hearen your best bet would be try to get to.the tree as fast as you can leash him up and then walk off a little ways cut your light out and let him tree leashes up for awhile a shock collar can help but if you don't know what your doing you will ruin a dog best way to use the e collar would.be turn a caged coon aloose in a field where there is some trees in the middle give the coon about a 45 men to and hour head start when the dog trees that coon and he goes to leave that tree give him a tickle and tell him to get back on that tree but always leash your dog up and try that befor you break out the e collar

Give him a couple coons and see what happens

Not staying treed is about the worst thing a hunter deals with in my book. Make you wanna pull your hair out. Specially if you see a Coon!! I've never dealt with it in one that age but something musta caused it. Make sure he's in good shape. Make sure his ears are ok. Take him to a vet for checkup. Have you hunted him alone and with something else and he still leaves?

I wouldnt want use one eather but the way I see it if the dog want stay treed after being hunted for awhile it want hurt him no more then he is now don't shock him on the tree just when you know 100 percent he is leaving and gets away from the tree.

And the best way that guy could of broke that dog off possum is one electric fence, two took that possum and beat that dogs butt with it a lot more ways but I've forgot them

I have seen older dogs do this when the owner decided the really wasn't into the dog anymore. And just let them run loose and never went to the tree's even though they where around the house.

Thanks guys. I have hunting him hard for six nights now and every night has been with another dog. He always gets back on tree when you shoot the coon. The worst is when the other dog gets on a different track mine will leave a tree. I just hope i can hunt him back to the way he was. I got this dog from my grandpa and he cant hunt anymore, i just he would have give the dog up before now.

take a switch and run it back to the tree.i dont know how
much grand pa hunted it that where i would start he may
not be but 1 in the woods.

options in order id try em

1. hunt him with another dog. when they tree and he leaves and comes back tie him back. knock out the coon. DO NOT LET HIM HAVE ANY OF THE COON AT ALL!! do this till he starts staying and treeing the way he should and then start giving him coons

2. let him see you loving on the other dog when he is treed and dont pay no attention to him (just an idea never tried it)

3. run him back to the tree with a switch then he will be afraid to leave because he will think he is in trouble if he does.

4. whenever he leaves the tree use the e collar ON A LOW SETTING just tickle him with it while your hollerin at him to get back on the tree and get up there get him leashed and get him treeing the way he should and walk away turn your light off. wait 5 minutes and then walk in and knock the coon out

start with option 1 or 2 and then work your way down the line. if none of this works its time to get a new dog

CLEAN his ears... being layed up that long prob has mites, dirty ears and it hurts to to tree.... try that first

Took him tonight by himself and done great. Two coons in an hour and he stayed on tree. Thanks to everyone for your input.
