have you ever had this happen

was huntin my young Iron dog last night. ran a nice track sat down and treed, got to him shot the coon out. Big boar far from dead, kickin Irons butt, so i pulled Iron back and shot the coon again. When i let go of Irons collar he collapsed like a wet noodle and slid down the bank on his belly and face and just laid there. I told my friend Iron just died. When i got down to him his eyes were open but noone was home. I picked his head up and he was just limp, tried to move him and he was limp. Finally i pulled his legs up under him and got him stood up, he stood there for a minute. Next thing ya know he wagged his tail kinda shook himself jumped up the bank and started woolin the coon again. I dont know what the heck was wrong, seizure....stroke... not sure. I do know that for a while he has acted like hes always out of breath or gets out of breath fast either from runnin or treein. Had a female years ago that acted the same way and had to have her put down due to an enlarged heart. Any input would be appreciated if you have had anything similar happen to give me ideas what to check for.

is the dog related to the female you had put down due to the enlarged heart? maybe it's the same thing? not sure.

Sounds to me like he fainted when you shot the rifle to kill the coon.I have had a couple dogs in the past that fainted on me.first time I was hunting sady in the 90's and she was running a deer I was laying down in a beanfield where the deer had run across and when she come close I jumped up and tackled her screaming and hollering and she fell limp my nephew who was about 10 at the time said after she come back to in a couple minutes "I almost started crying I thought sady was dead". She never run another deer that I know of after that.

I've seen them choked out with their collar. If it was being pulled tight against the bottom of his throat, that could have caused it.

I had a gyp once that do that once in awhile when she treed, she was a real hard treedog and she'd have seizures winter or summer then jump back up as if nothing happend at all.

Before I treated Trusty for his Heartworms he done that on a hunt one night. Was laying there stunned when I got to the tree. I laid him in a creek and he came back too. Vet said it was probably a peice of the worms dislodged and went to his lungs. Pulmonary Embolism. Needless to say I started him on the heartworm killer pills the next day and was end of his hunting for 2-3 months. Never did again.

I had an older dog do that once after I got to the tree. It was a warm (not hot) night and a collar was to tight. I loosened the hunting collar and he was ok by the time we reached the truck.I was begining to think I would have to carry him back to the truck though because he was almost out of it. He never did it again. Now I always make sure the collars are snug but not tight.

I know of a couple dogs like this and the vet said to give them some gatorade or honey to get their levels back up.Maybe a piece of candy before you let them go.So far it has worked and they have not had a nother spell.
