I bang the food bowls together before I feed haven't had a gun shy dog. Also started them all young shooting clay pigeons and target practice around them, giving them treats periodically. Never shot anything larger or louder then a 12 ga though.

some get over it and some dont i got a young gyp im gettin started 1st night out good thing i put her on a strap good thing 22 cracked she try to get away but shes gettin alittle better shes not so scared that when the coon hits the ground she wants to tear it up you might need to get that nieghor kid by the collar give him a good spankin

Posted by hazer on 11-20-2012 07:29 PM:

get ya some 22 blanks shoot every time you feed em. works better if you can get em ina small area like a garage, shed or barn . Takes awhile bet works. Shoot give treats shot give treats

When I start a pup I will only use CB Shorts until they get to wanting to get after the coon when it falls out of the tree.
If you have lots of patience hand feed same time of day every day and shoot a gun off while getting feed ready away from the dog, and over weeks move the one shot closer to the dog utill you can shoot a gun and set the food down for the dog.

i have always got the cb longs tied em up on a short chain 2-3 feet load the gun and set down and keep pettin em and talkin to em and givin em treats all the time that im shootin. eventually will come out of it

Call the law on em , just shooting up in the air is dangerous , who knows where the shot will end up . That's where I'd start .

How did you come up with shooting a gun up in the air in my post? Making things up is just wrong in my book. Right next to lying.

although i have seen a few hounds who were guy shy at all other times except when treed (and those shots didnt bother them a bit)...........for the most part bein gun shy is an inherited fault, and culling is quicker than fixing.....mostly because there never truely fixed.

those few who were gun shy around the kennel but not in the woods...........seemed to be just as storm shy too......thunderstorms ment hunting them was useless......

i have to agree this young gyp i got is scared of storms she will run a track and tree some till you come in to the tree you better put her on a strap or she probly leave but when the coon hits the ground she forgets all about the shooting shes gettin better but im about done with her

i had one here i bought as an old dog (she was 9 i think)..Duel grand/pkc champ with an all grand pedigree...no to mention just about every advertised stud dog in the time frame (and yrs before and after) were out of one of her sisters.

on frozen ground she had no equal. super loud male dog mouth. hard hunter. accurate. and simply could not be ran off a tree no matter what kind of gater she was cast with. she refused to take a whippin from man or beast.....

however she was terrified of thunderstorms, and casting her when one was around was useless. she had learned over the years to ignore a .22 (but was always a little touchy about it)..i personaly would have culled her as a pup if it had been me.........but she was a nice dog to have in a nighthunt cast

I play a radio real loud in the kennel for long periods of time. You can also order a CD tapes of gun fire. Best to use these at feeding time. You can also make these tapes yourselve.
