Ive got an old Blue dog that is 8. Every year about this time or earlier he goes to scratching and diggin.almost anytime I want to look down there at him he'll be doing this. Everyone Ive asked says its dry skin, and Ive put everything on him and bathed him in everything that I can think of. Does anyone know what this is and what I can do for him. All your help will be appreciated.
P.S. Ive got his full brother here and he doesnt do this. And He is also flea free, so thats not the problem.

well if it happens about this time every year I would guess it would have something to do with his winter coat comming in. Have you tried the derm caps from the vet or some cod liver oil to see if this helps his skin? if the itching only last for a few weeks a year then try some childrens benadryl.

Do you see dry flaking skin on him? If so just add a little oil (Wesson) to his food each day. Not a lot , just a small amount will do. It will keep the skin in better condition...

Some dogs are allergic to dry dirt this time of year - also - if the dog is in a dirt pen - are you SURE there are no fleas? You may have to spray dog & surroundings. Adams in the blue bottle works wonders for flea control

Excellant points.

I woudn't bathe him anymore. I would check your feed make sure it has plenty of animal fat in it. Beef and lamb as the first ingredient. Most skin irritations that are not parasite related can be cured with a proper diet. All replys brought up excellant points.

CP mentioned Wesson oil, I personnally would not reccomend that, its an unsaturated fat coming from vegetables and is easily expelled from the body. Which means the hound is not going to utilize. Better off going with cod liver oil. An Animal fat that can be efficiantly used by the body. Also throw him the fat from you steak or deer carcass this year. That will also help.

Give him some raw eggs...If it is dry skin, the eggs will help. The eggs will give him the protien need to make his skin produce oil...Try this if you think it is dry skin, it worked with my dog.

Protein has nothing to do with process of making fat or Oil. The cholesterol in the eggs (the yolk) have the basic building blocks for the production of lipids which are the building blocks of fats and oils. Protiens building blocks are amino acids which have nitrogen as its main element.

I agree eggs might help, but it is not the protein in the egge its the cholesterol and it building blocks.

If your a body builder and you drink eggs, you need to seprate the yolk from the white, because the yolk will make you fat. The whites are made up of protiens. This is going to be the chick later. The yolk is what the chick feeds off of.

Protiens are the building blocks genes...nucleotides make up amino acids which make up genes and chromosomes.

most of the time he takes his hind leg and digs on his stomach. he also turns around and bites around his tail and on the top of his back between his hip bones.I ve got him down and parted hairs and no sign of fleas and I spray for them regularly. It looks almost like mainge in places when he gets like this. I even thought this may be genetic. Thanks for all your help

Red mange is genetic, try some mitaban. My roommates have a mutt that does the same thing they only scratch in sertain places on there body. But the dog is healthy and no fleas.

there are a few tick repellant collars out there that have the same active ingredient as mitaban which is amitraz. find one of these collars at pet/feed store and try it. it's a lot cheaper than the mitaban dips and gives the dogs a longer dose. If it's a bad problem you may have to start with the mitaban dip. then follow up with the preventic collar. good luck.

If it happens only at a certain of year, and no changes have been made to your dog food. It isn't the dog food. Because if it was it would happen all the time. It sounds more like hot spots, the baldness is from bitting and itching. It is most likely allegries.
As a groomer I do see dogs that flare up worse in certain seasons of the year.
The dog can be bathed, but only with medicated shampoo supplied by your vet or groomer. Which will also help with the itching. None of that cheap Hartz stuff. There is also a product out there, that helps with all kinds of dogs aliments. It is supplement, that mixes into a gravy, called Nupro.

Your best bet would just see a vet.
