? about feeder buckets

i'm new to the feeder's,and was wondering what is the cheapest dog feed to put in them?,and how far do you sit them from where you turn the dogs loose at?how many feeders do you have running at all times.thanks for you time.mike

We can't use them in Va. anymore but this is what I use to do. Put out as many as your budget can hold. I usually only had about three out at a time. I would give the dogs about 50 yards when turning out on them. Find the cheapest feed around. Go to feed dealer and see what they have. Just make sure the feed does not get wet.

Ol roy(red bag) is about the cheapest Ive found.I run 1 or 2 buckets.I dont really turn right out on them.Just in the general area.

I AM FROM VA TO AND WHERE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE FEEDERS ANYMORE BUT WHEN I HAD THEM I WOULD BUY DOG FOOD FROM TRACTOR SUPPLY THEY HAVE A DOGGY DOG FOOD THAT IS REAL CHEEP LIKE 45 POUNDS FOR 6.99 A BAG I DONT BELIEVE THERE IS TO MANY HOUNDSMEN OUT THERE THAT WOULD FEED IT I KNOW I WOULDN'T FEED IT TO MY DOGS BUT IT WORKS GREAT IN FEEDER BUCKETS AND ITS CHEEP.

If your dog is fat,you aren't getting enuff exercise!

My brother and I use shell corn. We fill a 5 gallon bucket about 2/3 full of corn. We add water and let it soak 3 or 4 days. Sure smells and really draws coons in. Also I was told that the squirrels and deer won't bother it. We start a lot of pups this way.

i put the 1feeder about 50 yards from where i drop. the other about 100yds up the next hollow. if the deer won't eat the corn that will work,but we have 92 deer per sq forest mile here,so if your dog is'nt straight put on your hiking boots.thanks for all your help..mike..bearhunter,and wvhounds we need to get together,and watch this red dog go!!

I used a feeder for pups and I NEVER had a coon TOUCH a dog food feeder. Just wasted my money.

Now the soured corn is the ticket. They like that and if you wait till it's soured before you put it out you won't have much trouble with deer (at least I never did and we got WAY more deer than coon, took three weeks just to get ONE coon to usin my feeder LOL).

You guys where they just passed the law about bait may want to get a clarification (maybe wait a while though and let the clamor die down).

Technically we ain't supposed to use them in Tennessee either cause they have a law about killing game over bait. However, after talking to the local game wardens they said the law was aimed at the deer and turkey hunters not folks training dogs and they didn't see anything wrong with it because we usually didn't KILL the coon over the bait. Now they may have been stretching the law there, but they let me know that they wouldn't bother us about it as long as we acted decent about it and used it for training etc. I also made sure it was the ones that were in my jurisdiction because others may not "interpret" it the way they did LOL.

feeders

I use the soured corn also. The coons eat it pretty well and deer want eat it too well. I tried dog food when i first put them out and that worked also, corn is just cheaper. If you didnt want to take the time to sour the corn build you a platform 4 or 5 foot up on a tree and set a 55 gallon drum on it and it would last a long while and the deer wouldnt be able to get to it. Would save you filling your buckets up every week. Also I have some tire feeders up on trees, they work well also. But as far as what you put in the feeders, coons will eat just about anything. We even had a problem with coons eating our soybean pellets and deer feed out of our deer troughs, so find something cheap and get the coons used to it, they will stay around those feeders. Great way to train a puppy.

I use the Wal-Mart brand of dog food. Sour corn would definetly be better but if you have bears around the feeder will be destroyed and the bearwill keep coming back.

feeder buckets

i've never heard of using cat food,but i know coons like it.does'nt cat feed cost alot!i went tonight for an hour and a half hunted all around acorns,and cherry tree's and not a strike, even with my top hound.must be running late..thanks ..mike

dog feed

i got 2 feeders out with dog feed in them,but tsc only had feed for $10 or more,could'nt find the doggy dog food.what about whole corn? would squirlls,and rabbits be a problem with corn+ deer.sorry about the spelling been awhile since i had to think.thanks...mike

I also use the sour corn. I place the corn in an old tire and cut off a sappling about 3-4 feet off the ground and hang the tire on it. the only other animal I know of that will eat the corn besides a coon is a hog. If you don't have any hogs around you can just dig a hole near the creekbank close enough to have standing water and pour the corn in. That way no one can steal a hole and the coon is forced to run. If I can find my tire feeder pics I'll post them. Just can't remember what site I put them on.
