"Tail wagging the dog"

In our sport has the "tail" begun to "wag the dog"? 'coon hunting is a GREAT sport,(in it's own right) have we PROGRESSED or DETERIORIATED in our sport. Do you enjoy COON HUNTING for the sheer sake of the sport, fellowship and a good dog OR are we "CHASING THAT NEON RAINBOW"? Seems that most now are TOTALLY consumed with the the notion of having that "world renowned" dog. Night hunts were started for the sake of proving and improving on our efforts of breeding and training. Seems like most are now SHOPPING for a "winner".A few years back the "RULES" began to change in favor of the dog, now it seems the dog is being bred in favor of the rules. Why not concentrate on breeding and training a better dog, then the "CREAM" can be hunted to prove our efforts. EVERYONE cannot be BEST. JFK said"ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can co for your country. Can we not also apply this thought to the sport of coon hunting?

I could'nt agree more. I personally hunt because I have hunted with dogs all my life. I hunt because of the dog. It seems now that most folks wont even consider a hound unless it has papers a mile long with all the degrees it can possibly get. If a hound can strike, trail and tree that is enough for me. I had a feller tell me once the best way to ruin a good dog is to start comp hunting them. Just his opinion.

I think "MOST" people ARE "trying" TO breed "FOR a better "HOUND"

Seems TO "me" A coondog "IS" still a "coondog" wheather IT IS a "COMPETITION" dog OR "not"........

I believe pleasure hunters far outnumber the competion hunters. As for enjoying the sport, I think the hunter who is "chasing that neon rainbow" can enjoy it as much as anyone who is in it for the fellowship and joy of a good dog. It doesn't matter why we enjoy the sport, we don't ever need a pleasure hunters/verses comp hunters thing going on. There are plenty enough different styles of hounds out there to give us the type we like if we know where to look. I've never bred hounds, never welped a litter of pups. I am not striving to better the breeds because I'm not a breeder. I buy my pups. So what? And I sure don't think our sport has deteriorated. I like tracking collars and TriTronics. And anyone who thinks the hounds aren't better today than 30-40 years ago wasn't hunting 30-40 years ago. From what I can see, this sport ,both the comp hunts and pleasure hunting just keeps getting better.

Seems a little COMPREHENSIVE READING of posts would be good before "jumping off the cliff". I have re-read my post and see no mention of comp. hunter versus pleasure hunter. I am not a breeder either but, someone has to keep the pups coming for all the "culling" that we hear about. Seems we are all wanting "instant gratification"even in our hounds. Try training a well bred dog, this will cut down on the intense "culling". Every hound presents a different challenge. A.D.D. will not get it done.

I agree. I don't understand culling hounds. when I was in high school my dad bought our first hound, to keep the ringtails out of our sweetcorn. The men we bought that hound from told us all about training our hound and how to raise him. We tried alot of what the man told us, including keeping him in a kennel. That part only lasted a short while. My dad told me dogs were not ment to keep locked up until you need them they are here to run. So run our hound did. He always returned to our house. When I was old enough I got a job and moved 5 miles to town. Our hound did alright until he found out where I lived. He started traveling sometimes 4 times a week back and forth between our houses, never bothering anything, always waiting on one of our doorsteps. Now I know this is not going to happen with all hounds but the lesson I learned is priceless. Give these hounds more of a chance.

Cornhusker, This hound and your relationship with it was worth more than all the "titles" he could've amassed.

Just as I beleive that thereare more bad parents than bad kids, I beleive there are more bad trainers/handlers than sorry dogs.

Most every dog I've ever owned, I raised from a pup. Most of which I owned parents,grandparents and on back. In my opinion, you CANNOT be successful in training a hound if you don't know its potential,quirks and temperment. Changing from one family of dogs to another is more than I could deal with. Have messed up some in the process, but usually am able to get there. Have "culled" one(gave it away without papers)in the past several years. No "world beaters"here only good solid coon dogs.

Letting a hond run loose is the quickest way to cull them......

I disagree josh. The hound I was talking about treed coons until the day he died 11 years old. He hunted better than alot of hounds that have been kenneled.
