todays competition hunter.vs.yesterday coon hunter

so after another crazy week with hounds and the everyday life and a talk with grandpa ive thought bout some things and come up with a a few examples of how much competition coonhuntin has changed how we enjoy the sport..dont get me wrong i pleasure hunt just to keep them tuned up for town..thats also why i can speak from both points..not tryin to point fingers cause i love it both but lets look...
my grandpa goes coon huntin with me dog goes out huntin gets treed in bout 10 minutes has a coon... im mad cause he isnt 700 yards away. didnt open quick enough and didnt throw a good locate to call hher on. my grandpa says she did a nice job and enjoyed it..
next drop she dont do so hot makes a circle or slick tree im mad as a hornet she could of done this should of done that..mygrandpa just says its a rough track shell be fine..
these are just a few example the list can go on and on i kno myself after thinkin bout this sometimes im so wrapped up lookin at the garmin pleasure huntin worryin bout wut there doin to even realize im out huntin and enjoyin wut i truely love..but then the next weekend your spendin all that entry fee money to do it again and loose all your sleep not to mention the time away from family...lets hear wut you guys think

your exactly right hes out there enjoyin everything im stompin threw the woods like bigfoot mad as can be cause she aint threw the country with a coon 2 miles from another dog....how things have changed. and wut we expect now out of a dog

Coon hunting of the past was more out of have too. You didn't hunt just one dog you hunted 2 so so dogs to make one good dog. Today we hunt dogs for the battle of the weekend. We seldom buddy hunt any more because we are putting the fine tunning on that weekend battle hound. We are paying more money for a pup then we have ever paid and giving less for the good ol broke dog. It seems that their is more tricks to the trade then just having a good hound.

I think the idea of nite hunts being a "sport" is about as on par with the WWF brand of wrestling being a sport. What sport has a judge that competes next to the participants for the same prize? Thats a game.... a hustle more often than not......... but a sport? Please. Coonhunting is no different now than when I was a kid. It just seems now that more emphasis has been placed on the nite hunts. Breeding for a purpose has been replaced by breeding for a rulebook(and I use that term loosely).

yes that is true bout breeding for the meat.. and th battle hound for the weekend is a very good way to look at it..me and a buddy just got in from huntin a nice dog and also a pup that dont do nothin..it was a nice night drizzlin with no humidity.. the pup went in there with the old dog and treed his first coon. i went crazy. it was nice to leave the old dog at home and not be frustrated all night on how fast its all goin and see a pup start gettin it right.

I am a coon hunter,I might 1 dog or I might take them all.I just love a coon dog.I don't kill many coons but the ones I do kill we eat.I also squirrel hunt with a hound.The comp hunts are ok if that is what you like.I just don't like what I see in a lot of comp hounds.I breed what I hunt and I hunt what I breed.To me coon hunting should be fun whether you are a coon hunter or a comp hunter.When I quit having fun I'll quit.

I reckon I am an dinasaur these days as I am just a pleasure hunter. I hunt pleasure style dogs (mostly), and I mainly hunt during coon season. I highly value a true "January" coon dog over a hot nosed, pop up, go yonder dog like a lot of today's competition dogs seem to be. Heck, if I can't just go out and enjoy coon hunting without a lot of stuff I don't like, then, why fool with it?

I have owned plenty of Grand Nite and Nite Champions. And, I have owned plenty of good solid coon dogs that would never win a cast. I have had some Grands I highly valued and enjoyed. But, these days, for the most part, I hunt "pleasure" style coon dogs. I do sometimes hunt the other type to train and sell. But, you can be sure those hard going, go yonder types are for sale. LOL. Life is too short to not enjoy the dogs I hunt.

I don't have or need a Garmin and I keep my cell phone turned off. I do run trackers on my dogs but rarely have to track them. They tree the first coon possible, they don't have to hunt in the next county to find a hot track they can pop up.

I have to respectfully disagree with most of these post. Just because you competition hunt doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself and expect the same things.

Ya'all need to slow down and relax a little. It doesn't matter if I am pleasure hunting or competing, I expect the same things from my dogs. I will admit I sometimes think I expect too much, but that is only because I have been spoiled by good dogs. I have not been spoiled by competition.

I had a good hunt with my 14 year old son Friday night. Did the dogs do as well as I would like? No, but they didn't do horrible either. The thing is my son and I enjoyed the evening with 2 dogs and each other.

Saturday night, I judged a youth cast and meet a couple of young men that many adults could take lessons from. Fact of the matter is eventhough the weather was nasty I again had a good time.

Life is what you make it. The same goes for coon hunting whether it is competition or just plain ole hide hunting.

Aim small miss small

To me it is all about me enjoying the dog I am hunting. For me to enjoy a dog, it has to make things happen and do it in a pretty quick manner and do it alone 90% of the time and with a buddy or two 10% of the time and not embarass me in the process. If I am enjoying the dog that I am hunting, it makes me want to go hunting and take the dog to the hunts to see how we are progressing. Whether or not this dog can compete in any format is just a bonus. I coonhunt because I enjoy it. When winning becomes more important then me having a good time and hunting a style of dog I enjoy, then its time for the to do something else.
