I think the only time this is allowed is in the final cast of the world hunt and that's only IF you actually get hurt or sick.

Never allowed at local hunts.

It's like baseball, when you're, you're out for the night. You can go to your backup at any hunt but you can't go back in once you get out.

So jim youre saying that at a local hunt or even a hunt like the oaks you can have a back up handler?

Also, I believe the origional handler has to be unable to complete the hunt, you arent supposed to switch just because you want to....But then, excuses are easy to come by.

Rqe's, zones, and finals allow for 1 backup handler.

Rule number 1
"Judge SHALL give permission for another handler to complete hunt."
It doesn't say "only at the world hunt" or "but not at just any old hunt" and "shall" means the judge must allow the backup to take over and complete the hunt.

There was a guy a few years ago who hunted in UKC hunts and he was blind. He actually called the dog, but someone else led the dog and, in a way, led him, too. I don't know how the rules worked on this deal as I was too young to pay attention. He also showed dogs. Someone else would lead them around the circle and get them on the bench, then he would set them up by touch. Had some nice looking dogs, too. He could feel all the defects and get them set up right.

There is a guy in southern Illinois who has a bad heart (had a couple surgeries on it) and he always brings a backup handler with him. Most of the time he completes the hunt himself, but he wants to be sure. We just mark "backup handler" on the entry slip. It's good for someone who is older or who might have some health concerns that may not be able to finish a 2 hour hunt. Why waste your entry fee if you won't be able to finish? Get a backup handler and your dog still has a shot even if you can't make it the two hours.
