7/27/07 Youth Hunt
AT THE UKC NIGHT HUNT 6 YEAR OLD TANNER SIZEMORE ENTERED HIS COON DOG "PR" TANNER'S SOGGY BOTTOM STUB IN THE OPEN DIVISION CLASS NIGHT HUNT. THE TROPHYS WERE DISPLAYED AT THE COON CLUB 1ST PALCE THRU 10TH PLACE OPEN DIVISION CLASS FRIDAY NIGHT AND QUALIFIED DIVISION CLASS 1ST THRU 10TH PLACE FRIDAY NIGHT. TANNER SAID I HOPE I WIN ONE OF THOSE TROPHYS AND LIGHTS. I TOLD HIM TO DO HIS BEST CALLING HIS DOG AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THERE WERE 96 DOGS ENTERED IN THE HUNT. TANNER HUNTED AGAINST 3 OTHER BOYS TWICE HIS AGE AND HE WON HIS CAST WITH 150+ POINTS. TANNER WOULD HAVE PLACED HIGH IN OPEN CLASS BUT WHEN WE WENT BACK TO THE COON CLUB SATURDAY, TANNER THINKING HE WAS GOING TO GET HIS TROPHY AND LIGHT, WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE GOING TO COMBINE THE TWO DIVISIONS TOGETHER. THIS PUT TANNER IN 11TH PLACE KNOCKING HIM OUT OF HIS TROPHY AND LIGHT. THIS WAS TANNER'S FIRST COMPETITION HUNT, THE JUDGE ON OUR CAST WAS SURPRISED HOW MUCH TANNER KNEW ABOUT COON DOG'S AND COON HUNTING. THE OTHER KIDS AND THERE DADS CONGRATULATED TANNER FOR WINNING. HE WAS SO FULL OF JOY AND HAPPINESS. A 6 YEAR OLD WINNING AGAINST OTHER KIDS TWICE HIS AGE WAS QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. TANNER WAS UP FOR 19 HOURS THIS DAY AND AT 3AM HE WAS PUMPED UP BECASUE HE WON. BUT IT ALL ENDED WHEN HE WAS TOLD HE DIDN'T GET A TROPHY OR LIGHT. HE WAS SO DISAPPOINTED AND SAD. HE WOULDN'T HUNT SATURDAY NIGHT BECAUSE OF THIS. THESE HUNTS ARE TO GET KIDS INTERESTED IN COON HUNTING. BUT IF UKC IS GOING TO DO STUFF LIKE THIS TO A 6 YEAR OLD WHAT WOULD THEY DO TO GROWN UPS. TANNER SAID HE WILL HUNT PKC HUNTS BEFORE HE HUNTS IN ANYMORE UKC HUNTS BECAUSE THEY DID THIS. TANNER WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. ON THE WAY HOME HE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID DADDY YOU KNOW WHAT IT DOESN'T MATTER ABOUT HOW THIS TURNED OUT, I LOVED THE HUNT AND THAT I WON MY CAST. NOT ONLY THAT, I MADE YOU PROUD OF ME. THEN I TOLD HIM I WOULD ALWAYS BE PROUD OF HIM. HE ALSO SAID, DADDY YOU TOLD ME TO ALWAYS BE HONEST AND DON'T CHEAT AT ANYTHING I DO, SO WHY DID THEY DO ME LIKE THIS. I TOLD HIM WHO KNOWS. WHEN HE ENTERED THE HUNT THEY LOOKED AT TANNER LIKE YEAH RIGHT A 6 YEAR OLD "WHAT WILL HE DO". WELL LET ME TELL EVERYONE AT UKC TANNER IS THE REAL DEAL. HE PLAYS TO WIN.
A DISAPPOINTED 6 YEAR OLD AND A VERY PROUD DAD!
Dickie, Sorry to hear that Tanner didn't place. But Congradulate him for me anyways. He did all he could do by winning his cast. I was his judge that night. Tanner did well for a 6 year old kid. He is a world class kid. He had me laughing all night. So tell him not to give up on it yet. There is always another night. Here is a couple of pics that I took of Tanner that night. Hope you enjoy. Larry
This Is Tanner waiting on another cast member to catch their hound.
This is Tanner signing his name to the card after winning the cast.

Congrats on the cast win! Sorry about the way the hunt ended up with a real mix up. I sure hope you'll get back out there and do it again in all the registries. I think the parents and adults should get together before hand, see how things are going to go, be sure no changes have been made etc... It's hard enough for an adult to take that kind of disappointment but worse for the kids. Hope this is the last time something like this happens.
I really know nothing about the comp. hunts. I did used to show horses and had one show where I won some major classes...they "ran out of ribbons".. and they were "going to send them"... not only never go the ribbons but we also got no points from the show. The show organizers were "punished" by the Amer. Horse Show Assoc. but... we were kids and you never forget the dissapoinment. You CAN however rise above it, go on and continue to hunt, win, lose and most of all HAVE A BLAST!
We'll be rooting for you! HappyHunting, Heather&Bob William

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU AND YOUR SON. YOU BOTH SHOULD BE VERY PROUD. I HOPE UKC CAN LEARN FROM THIS SITUATION. EVERY KID ENTERING THE HUNT SHOULD RECEIVE SOME TYPE OF AWARD AND EVERY CAST WINNER SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN SOME TYPE OF TROPHY. IF AN AWARD OR TROPHY COULD KEEP JUST 1 KID INTERESTED IN HUNTING AND AWAY FROM THE EVIL IN THE WORLD TODAY IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH IT. AS A KID, WHEN I WON MY FIRST TROPHY AT A HUNT, I WAS HOOKED AND STILL AM TODAY. SINCE THEN I HAVE SPENT MANY THOUSNDS OF DOLLARS ENTERING HUNTS AND REGISTERING DOGS WITH UKC. UKC SHOULD REALIZE THAT A TROPHY/AWARD IS A SMALL INVESTMENT IN OUR YOUTH TO KEEP THEM HUNTING, NOT TO MENTION THE BUSINESS THAT YOUTH MIGHT CONDUCT WITH UKC IN YEARS TO COME.
Way to go Tanner, .

UKC is real good at not delivering what they promise some of their Cur and Feist events they were supposed to have a dog box, guess what? No box, other times they say they will have a field representative at a hunt again no show.
That is double rotten to do that to a youth hunter.
Congrats Tanner! That's a great accomplishment for you!
I'm not trying to sound mean by this, however, Tanner won his cast on Friday. That qualified him to win one of 4 $2000 dollar scholarships on Saturday, as well as a light and trophy.
From all the other years I've attended YN, kids have walked away with something just for entering, so perhaps if they didn't do any good they still had that something to show for their trip.
While I'm sure he was a pretty disappointed kid because he got beat in the end, you have to get back out there and keep trying for what you want and remember to shake the other one's hand, win or lose.
Just to let you know I've won my cast and was beat out for placement also at a YN, that's going to happen and that's something my dad has always told me. He wanted to see me do good, but he also made it clear about losing. And getting right back in there to do what I love.

Dickie & Tanner
I was your guide and you both did well in calling your dog. I know he was let down but that is no reason to quit hunting UKC or any other KC. That is the way the ball drops sometimes. Just be proud of what you done and don't put so much on lights and Trophies but on the fun you and your little boy had. You don't know of the times people loose on the last drop and last scorecard being turned in, in the NiteCh Class. You sit there all night thinking you got it won but to get beat by 25 pts. That is just comp. hunting. Tell Tanner to hold his head up and let him know he did a great job. There will be other times he will win. Just hang in there.

The trophies were most certainly not displayed as you described. There are 30 trophies for the entire weekend. Same as every other Youth Nationals. There is one (1) hunt on Friday night and two hunts on Saturday Night, which is the National Championship night.
Friday Night we divided the kids out into 12 and under qualified, 12 and under open, 13-17 qualified and 13-17 open. The reason for this is so the qualified kids don't knock the open kids out of the opportunity to qualify. All Open kids that win their cast with plus points get qualified for the scholarship round on Saturday.
Even though they are in 4 divisions on Friday, they place as one. If you would like you can go to the news page and look at the picture of the trophies as they were displayed. There are 30 Nite Hunt Trophies, 7 Bench Show Trophies and 6 Water Race trophies. 10 Nite Hunt Trophies for Friday and 20 for saturday.
You stated that we said we "were going to combine the two divisions together" That statement was never made. More than likely I said "The two divisions ARE combined together". This is how it has been done for 7 years.
Winning his cast qualified him for the scholarship round. EVERY plus point cast winner on Saturday night in the qualified division placed in the hunt, won a trophy and won a light. Had he repeated his Friday performance he would have went away with plenty of prizes.
I understand that you wanted your child to win. Every parent would love for their child to win. He did a good job and I am sure that you are proud of him. I would be. Heck my 10 year old and 7 year old had to stay home so I could go and put this event on for other people children. After reading things like this, I wish I had stayed home and spent time with them.
I normally try to be more diplomatic than what I am going to say, but I am upset with your words about a great event. You say UKC did something to your child. You make it sound like we did something bad to him. The only thing UKC did was for your child and that was to give him the opportunity to go with his Dad and enjoy the sport with his Dad. We gave "you" a great opportunity to have a great weekend with him and let him learn. I wonder what he learned?
Life isn't all about winning and losing. The weekend isn't about who wins the most prizes. That is what you made of it, not UKC. Yes plenty of prizes were given out and some kids walked away with more than others. Enjoying the sport we all love with the entire family, making friends and learning about sportsmanship are the biggest prizes. Sorry you missed out on all the prizes.

THIS IS NON OF MY BUSINESS BUT MR TODD YOU LEFT YOUR FAMILY TO DO A JOB JUST LIKE THE ONE SOME OF US WHO LEAVE OURS TO GO TO WARS OR WHAT EVER BUT WE MUST NOT GET SO UPSET WHEN PEOPLE OFFER THERE OPINION ABOUT OUR JOBS BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE JOBS WE CHOOSE.....IF WE DON'T LIKE WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ELSE..................Heck my 10 year old and 7 year old had to stay home so I could go and put this event on for other people children. After reading things like this, I wish I had stayed home and spent time with them

How you can possibly compare my job to going to war is beyond my logical way of thinking. Actually I think it is disrespectful to those who have gone to war to make any type of comparison. The sacrifices cannot be compared.
He did not offer an opinion, he offered it as fact. Nowhere did he state it was his opinion. I just was not willing to let UKC be given a bad name on this one for something that we all work on so hard. Had he stated facts and pointed out problems that were real, I would not have replied. I wanted to set the record straight.

This situation does not seem to me to be any blame on anyone. He did a great job with his dog bugt was not in the number position he needed. The whole idea I thought about Kids Events is first have a great time sharing dogs with family and friends and making new friends and then the compition. Not everyone is going to win they may come close but not win and I can just bet you your son was not the only one close but nopt close enouigh. I appericate the UKC people that do give up their family time so my family can share good wonderful fellowship with other coonhunters so thank you UKC. Just my opinion

Tanner You did a great job! we are all so proud of you. I have taken my kids to every one of these youth championships that UKC has put on, and I know how Tanner feels thinking he won a prize but he did win. Next year when you go you will realize what you won, you will see all the friends that you met this year and you will play harder around the club grounds and enjoy the trip to diff. hunting grounds, and most of all you will enjoy the time that is spent preparing for the hunt ( whitch is the best part for me as a parent) Thank you UKC for a wounderfull week end!
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE GUIDE AND JUDGES
April's judge drove 3 hr. one way just to judge a youth cast and alot of judges stayed in motels over night just to help.
gas ($75)
motel ($75) x-2
Food ( ? )
Now this gets me thinking WHAT CAN I DO ??
