Folks who know much more than I. How far up in the LP before Porcupines become a real concern?

Thinking about a Mid Oct hunt just south of Clare for a week this fall. I've gotten into Porky's with the bird dogs before up north of Baldwin. Don't really want to deal with that again if it can be avoided.

Thanks Gents!! I'm thinking of the first week of Nov up a bit north of you Tony, but i may wimp out and hang south.. I only had to pull quills once, but don't care to ever do it again!!

I see most all those counties just above you have pretty much opened up the county roads to ATV traffic. Thinking it could be a very fun hunt.

appears the southern lower will get opened up this January possibly.

1/2 cc of acepromazine is the trick.

Donnie has pulled more quills with his teeth than most of us have ever pulled with pliers Lol

There is no proof of that....that I'm aware of lol

You boys are tough up there in the nort country. Do your hounds eventually get broke off them like other off game?

Yes it's a process same as anything else. I usually try to make their first experience very traumatic. The ones that will sit there calmly and let you pull quills are usually the ones that will do it again tomorrow night. They're getting thicker up here every year one night this spring we seen close to 50 one night they outnumber the coons 5-1 easy. You are not gonna get thru the night without addressing it lol. I wouldn't say the young male I'm huntin now is quite broke but he's severely bent.

smart dog one time stupid dog 4 or 5 times first thing i like when starting a pup is for it to sniff there butt get wacked in the face problem solved where most guy's make the mistake is allowing a pup to get in on a coon kill before learning about possums , skunks, porkies young dog thats has killed a coon thinks it can kill anything it catches on the ground i've pulled thousands over the years many times its not even my dog

I lived and hunted in porky country (Isabella County) for most of my childhood... I have pulled more quills than I care to think about lol but I still love the hunting up there!! Honestly I would say that most times they are not a problem. I have not lived there in years, but still go hunting up there a few time a year and never have a problem with getting into them.

Tony I will absolutely come up for a boat ride and a hunt this fall. Loved that trip up there last October. Can't wait to do it again!! You have some of the best hunting in the country.

Brandon I like that big woods country up north. Hard to beat for a person who likes the outdoors.
