coon hunting with feists or feist/cur crosses

Hey guys,
I have a pretty gritty little feist/cur cross that I was thinking about trying on coon in the smaller spots I hunt where I cant really run my hounds. Now believe me, I would NEVER allow a dog of this size to rumble with a shot out coon but I figured if I could shoot the coon out, have the dog tied back and only let him have it after it has expired, no harm would be had. So has anyone ever used or heard of using these dogs on coon? he is great on squirrel but was thinking of giving coon a shot.
Thanks Jim

How big is your dog? I have a cur feist cross and don't coon hunt her alot but I tree some coons with her and she's good at it and had no problems handling herself with a livly one there's people that hunt the Mcandrews feist alot on coon and tree alot and the champ line of feist I no of several that coon hunt. If your dog will tree them I'd say go get 'em and good luck

I have a McAndrews female that is a fireball on squirrel or coon(or possum lol) She hunts hard day or night, and seems to get more excited about treeing coons than squirrels. She has had many coons shot out to her that are bigger than her. I would recommend tying your dog back and try to shoot the coon out dead. Good luck and have fun.

I appreciate the feedback gentlemen. This little dog is heavy Barger Stock Feist. He is about the size of a large feist. He is hell on squirrel and I was just thinking with my spots for coon hunting the hounds getting smaller, he would be the perfect fit for those smaller woods.

They are great patch hunters that's how I hunt mine she's a 32lb dog so maxed out on feist size I'd try it I'm sure you'll enjoy it

PURE FEIST is like saying PURE CUR. Lol their background is simply mixed breed dogs. Cur, feist, both were just good treeing farm bred dogs for years.

What I ment by pure feist was they have been bred the same way for many years nothing outside brought in many years of line breeding

If the dog wants to tree coons I would be all for it. Like you stated I would try my best to shoot the animals out dead. But I do that with 50-60# curs. I see no need to take a chance on a dog loosing and eye or any unnecessary chances for injury to the dog. Plus if you ever have to nurse a dog through CDP you will do your best to eliminate the chance of a dog being bitten by a coon. They will get enough just by the ones that catch on the ground etc.

My buddy had a one eyed Kemmer cur, coon got the other one when she was young. Another friend of mine had a feist that liked to tree coon and he hunted it on them but didn't tie it back, shot one out that landed on the dog's leg and broke it's front leg. The dog quit hunting after that incident. Never showed anymore interest.

Yea I think these dogs are definitely too small not to be tied back.

I recently bought a female that is half feist and half walker coonhound. It was an accident but there were 3 in the litter and this one was treeing everything so the guy tied her up. In this particular cross the male was the coonhound and female was the feist, pretty rare! The male is Lockbox and double Skuna River Fred and the female is not registered, but suppose to be a reall squirrel dog. I just moved back to IN and haven't broke her out yet, but I'm really tempted to try her on coon at night with coonhounds. Going to hunt her on squirrel to start with to get her used to me and break her to handle. She is about 35lbs and has a nice mouth, also built really well. We'll see, but I'd say any combination of these little treeing dogs could be real nice coon dogs......
