Dear Mr. Elvis

I've spent the majority of the last 43 years training highly advertised pups that were early starters and would run and tree a coon before a year old, but by 2 years old they had maxed out their natural ability. They were nice dogs that could tree about a coon an hour, but I was wanting one that was "World Class" in performance. They were of average intelligence and could not advance beyond their natural ability due to lack of brains. I'm sure that you have encountered this problem and have solved it. I could save time and money if I could evaluate a pup for intelligence before spending the time training it only to find out my early starting "natural" was too dumb to go to the top level. Would you share the IQ test that you use as I'm running out of time? Thanks in advance. Has it been patiented?

I know somebody's got to train them but most serious trainers have a certain bloodline that's dominate in the traits they demand and the only way that they share that imformation with anybody else is in the winners circle.

If you pay attention you will find that those special dogs probably come along about one in ten thousand, and the guys leadin them searched far and wide for that talent and paid dearly when found it. Now you gotta add in how rare those guys are that can look at a dog go and see that something special.

Ive found I breed my own females,that way I know pup is comen from a coondog on bottom side,that always helps!! U buy a pup at major hunt or from individual your just taken another mans word. I've had several what you call natural coon treeing pups but in my opinion a pup that takes time an shows consistent progress finishes out best !!

A dum dog and a good trainer don't work out good.But a good dog and a dum trainer and a shock collar is even worst.

I could write a novel on this subject. I've examined closely every big time winner I've ever hunted with. As far as brains maybe. But does it take a genius to be a world class athlete? All I can tell you is this is the traits I would look for in a pup if I wanted to train a world class winner. First is heart - in order to win big hunts you are going to need this. Winning round after round hunting all night for several nights in a row alot of hounds can't take even if there in shape.#2 locating ability and accuracy. Some hounds have a natural ability to locate a coon fast when they smell it. #3 independence - a hound cannot be accurate without this trait. They must be independent to the point of being deaf witch will put them alone most of the time primarily on there ability. When you have this, compitition hunting does not bother them. If they know no other dog is in the world they don't pick up bad habits. #4 temperament - fine line. I like one that will let anything tree with them but can stay treed with anything without fighting. 5 recasting- alot of dogs are good out of the truck, but after that they tree one its hard to get it off there mind.#6 mouth you can hear. #7 unique. There needs to be something different about them that makes them special. Finding this over one hide is difficult

Now if I was looking I wish I had a wild pup. It's that #1 trait and alot of times means you have to start off with a idiot. What I mean is the HEART. And the trainer has to have it to to walk behind one. I really believe its the laziness of the public as to why its so hard to find a good one. The only world class hound I've owned would PUNISH you if you flipped her and coons were not walking. As far as intelegence she is a pleasure to be around. All I can tell you is the faint of heart and average coonhunter complains when they hunt with her.

Can you breed for "intelligence"? I wonder how many would rather have "wild n crazy" rather than "laid back and smart". I also wonder how much the age of the trainer plays into the answer?

Intelligence is critical.

Heart, drive, desire, whatever you want to call it, is also critical.

The special ones have all of this, along with tracking ability, locating ability, independence, and that uncanny, indefinable something I like to call coon sense.

We breed for what we think we want, and by doing so we can stack the deck in our favor, but at the end of the day the good ones are where you find them.

"Winners" are difficult to replicate genetically.
