Who's on the ice??

Decided to go catch some bluegills yesterday on a small lake in the middle of a woods I coon hunt at. The gills were biting good. Cleaned 67 last night and hitting it again today with my son and nephew. This is one of the best lakes I have ever seen for catching huge gills. I'll post some pics later on after we get off the lake. Gotta do something! Going nuts sittin around the house watching reruns along with lookin at 14 " of this white stuff on the ground!! Come on spring,can't get here soon enough for my likings!! Anyone else hitting the ice??

Sat and Sunday results!!

On Sat ,my nephew Chris and my son and I went to the lake. Together we caught 103 gills and got home and cleaned them up. Today I went by myself and gathered up 117 and just got them done up,cleaned and in the deep freeze! I found out that coon are moving real good in the act of fishing for gills. My son asked me what to do with the small ones that swallow the hook,told him to just throw them on the ice,coons will find them and they did!! Today,lake covered in coon tracks in the snow so on Monday,all the scraps from fishing I'm going to take to the lake and feed the coons! What better way then to have it both ways! Got some picks coming and one real good one!! Dinner is served on Saturday nite after we got done cleaning them up!! MMMMM!! GOOD!!!Know one else is having a good time on the ice?? Well,we are!! Enjoy the pics and if ya feel the need for some gills to eat,stop over and will shoot some BS and I'll have the wife cook up a batch for ya!! All is welcome here!! Later,Danny G.

Nice job on the gills. I fished both days this weekend. Had a great time. Had the family over to the house and fished my pond Saturday afternoon. Had a little fishing Derby with prizes. The kids caught some decent gills. Several 9 inchers. Sunday I fished a gravel pit pond and we hammered big gills and perch. Limits. Having bluegill fillets in the freezer makes ya feel rich! ha!

Great day on the ice today!!

Just got done frying up some gills and gettin ready for a shower and some sleep! It was 24 degrees when I hit the lake this morning at 9:20. When I got off the ice,it was 9 degrees with the wind blowing 25 to 35 MPH and it was cold. Yes,I was in a shelter with my hillbilly heater,a small coleman cook stove with a cast iron skillet on top of it with a brick in the middle to keep me warm!!!!! Caught and cleaned 122 gills today with the biggest being 10 " long. Most were around 8 to 8and 1/2" for the most part along with a few smaller ones that swallowed the hook.Looking to take a break for a few days and get back at it later in the week! Gill fishing has been great

Still catching them and some real nice ones to boot. I took a trip to my aunts and fished her lake. The gills were huge when I took the kids there to fish years ago. They're still there!! I purchased a tumble drum to scale them and keep the skin on them and it has worked out great. Well it's 3:43 am and I have to head to the bussiness and get some work caught up! I'll post some updated pics when I get home. Going to try and get on some perch this weekend. Later,Danny G.

Lots of way to do them up!

Been catching the gills on a pin minnow with wax worms,meal worms and maggots. Silver and chrome in color seems to do the best. If no action,we change to blue and chrome. No weight,just letting the pin jig slowly drift to the bottom with most fish being caught before it reaches the bottom. As you start catching them,the bigger gills seem to always rise up in the water column and feed there. Sometimes just 3 or 4 feet below the ice. It can get crazy when the good gill bite is on!! Fixin them up!!Bluegill cottail,just put some melted butter in baking dish,put in gills fillets and broil them for 15 minutes or until they flake easy. Then put in bowl and into fridge to cool. Then just get the cottail sauce out and enjoy! We broil them with spices and eat them that way also. Bluegill parmason is also good. Also pan fry or deep fry them depending on how we want them done that day.We do it both ways.Also like gill patties,made like salmon patties but use gills instead. Bluegill chowder is also real good. You can find all these recipes online and add or change to your likings. Got a few pics down loading now plus a real quick video of how I fillet one. I think the video is about 45 seconds total. I can go thru a mess of gills in short order. All fillets bone free of course!! Everyone has thier own way of filleting a gill,this is the way I do it!!I purchased a tumble drum to scale them and it has worked out well. Just put in the first batch and get them scaled,remove from drum and throw in another batch and by the time the first ones are done being filleted,the second batch is ready to start on. Gills just taste better when the skin is left on rather taken off. At least I think so. Gonna hit the ice leter today after it warms up a bit!!Later,Danny G.
