Andy,. Handlers option to turn back loose after scoring tree only if dog or dogs are treed AND there is at least one dog Trailing. Running Track. So in case of 3 dogs handled , and one dog treed before the other 3 are recast. then them 3 should of not been turned back loose. should of been walked into the 4th dogs tree. If 2 are handled , one is treed, and one is trailing, then the 2 dogs handled have option to turn back loose. How I understand the Rule.

Andy the only thing wrong about the way Kenny explained the rule is in order for the dogs on the lead to have the option 1 or more dogs simply have to be loose and not treed, they dont have to be struck in.
In your case you handled it right, they are leash locked .

Kenny I think you are right on the money with this answer with one minor correction. Now I may be wrong about this, but here is my one critique.

It is my understanding that; if in a four dog cast, Lets say dogs A-B-C-D. Dogs A-B-& C are struck, dogs A&B are treed and scored. lets say coming off A&B's tree we find dog C is now declared treed and dog D has not yet opened. Handlers A&B have the option to either turn loose or hang on to their hounds even though, Dog D has not yet opened, thus not really (trailing). So using the term (trailing) indicates a dog must be opening before a handler can utilize this option, thus making that term a little misleading.

It is my understanding that dog D is only required to be competing for a strike and not actually trailing for a handler to utilize his option to turn back loose.

I understand this is only a minor adjustment to your statement but it could come into play with some of the tight mouth hounds of today.

Have a GREAT Day guys!!! Good Hunting to you all!

You are correct. I recall Allen G stating some time back that the wording would be corrected in the rule book but it never was.

Jim, thanks for clarifying, cause I was right on board with Kenney, thought at least one had to be struck in. The rule reads "trailing" so I took that to mean struck.

Rule 11. Says you have to turn to dogs opening on trail unless one is treed.

This is a good example of quoting PART of a Rule. Rule 11 does say that but the rest of the rule continues with "However, if................." Read the whole rule.

Andy it is under rule 11 but it is not stated clearly, it says as long as a dog is "trailing" UKC. has said this simply means the dog is atlarge.
By the way your old chopper dog is now a GRNTch HTX2. and has some money won in PKC. Thinking of breeding him to my Bone female in the spring.

Jim, I wasn't quoting anything. Just illustrating which rule covered it.

The However if part goes on to say you can release to dogs that are trailing. But the sentence before says turning back to dogs opening. I guess that's what makes it fuzzy.

If there is an advisor that covers it, could someone post it? I'm on the dang iPad and can barely turn this thing on.

Yes Jim, I was slightly off. Yes if one is at large, Handler can either turn loose, or walk there dog into the tree. but some think only if a dog is trailing.
