Ivomec ?

How much in CC's should be given to a German Shepherd per month? Thanks in advance folks!

There is some kind of sensitivity test for collies and shepherd breeds to be given before administering any dose of Ivermec. Too much might kill some dogs of those breeds.

I would NOT use it on a Shepard. It is perfectly safe on hounds but not herding dogs... Here's the story:

Collies, herding dogs and Shepards with ivermectin sensitivity have been found to have a mutant gene for what is called the "P-glycoprotein.

Approximately 35% of Collies have a genetic mutation creating a non-functional P-glycoprotein. This allows for ivermectin doses that would normally be blocked from the central nervous system to gain access to it.

Again, the breeds considered at high risk for ivermectin toxicity are Collies, Shetland sheepdogs, Australian shepherds, Merle colored Pomeranians and Old English sheepdogs.

Don't take my word for it, Google it. There are tons of articles on it. Use it on the hound but not the shepards.

I have a ten year old AKC German Shepherd that gets a monthly dose of Ivermectin since he was three months old. He is in perfect health. I also had a female that got it every month and raised several litter of pups off of the female with no problems. I give mine 1 1/4 ccs a month. He weighs about 115#.

The breeds that are sensitive to ivermectin can safely take it at the CORRECT dosage rates for heartworm prevention. Using a 1% solution the correct dosage is 0.1 CC per 76 pounds. This rate will kill the microfillia that is part of the heartworm's life cycle. Ivermectin is so safe in most dogs that you can safely over dose without consequences.

About 10% of German Shepherds are positive for MDR1.

For them you should really stick to a commercial heart wormer or don't give more than 500 mcg's TOTAL, which is .05CC.

some say 1/4 cc i aways give mine 1 full cc and my dog look as good as any dog out there i wont give them anything els!!

Bill I've used it for over 25 yrs. on all kinds of dogs from hounds to shepherds never had anything but good results. I use the 1% cattle injectable. 1cc worms 110 lbs. Go to oldcountryvet.com and watch Dr. James Busby's vidios on heartworm treatment, rabies vaccines and lyme disease testing.

I agree that 1CC WORMS a dog but 0.1 CC for a 76 pound dog is all that is needed to PREVENTS heart worms.

Friend of mine raised Border Collies for years. He sold two litter mates to his boss (he worked in a feed store). He gave them both Ivomec for heartworm preventative. One was fine; the other died a horrible death.

Not every collie or shepherd will be sensitive, true, but I'm not rolling the dice. I've got a Texas Heeler (1/2 Aussie / 1/2 Red Heeler) and I won't give it to her like I do the hounds. I use the store-bought, more expensive preventative. She could be fine if I just gave her the Ivomec, but it's not a risk I'm going to take.
