tree tricks

what are some of the best techniques you have found to get a young dog to hold a tree longer?

I have a young dog who will get treed but often will only hold for a short period of time, less than 5 minutes.

what would you do to increase the tree time in a hurry?

Stay very close to the dog if possible so you can get to the tree as quickly as possible. Are you sure he isnt quitting when he hears you coming? That can be a terrible problem to correct.

When you get to the tree, tie him and do not let him mill around. If you find the coon give him plenty of positive reenforcement. At this point, if you do not find the coon occasionally, I would not get rough with him because it may make his leaving worse.

ive got one doing the same thing,just tryin to stay close and get him tied up and knock a few out to him. its aggravating for awhile but i believe pretty common in dogs,ive seen several like this.

if you are hunting himwith another hound tie him to a tree and shot it out to the other dogs dont let him have it that will get him to start sticking on the tree better and treeing harder

try this, kill a coon & carry it back to your truck. take & lay a drag put sent on tree & carry coon back to your truck. turn him out & let him tree it. go put him on a leash & keep him fired up on the tree dont tie him back keep him on the tree. have someone shoot the gun & through the coon up through the tree & let it fall by him. before he starts to slack off.
load him up move & let him settle back down. do it again & wait just a little longer before you go to him but make sure you get to him before he starts to slack off on the tree. do this 1 to 3 times in one night, you can use the same coon 2 nights in this weather.

you got a hot track & hot tree & can get to him exactly when you want to before he leaves & put meat in his mouth every tree.

dont hunt him in the time your doing this with him just do this exercise with him. that way he dont have a chance to leave a tree before you get there. if you do it right it'l help.

get in there tie him up where he can get to the tree , shine if you find the coon take a little walk 10 min. come back tell him good boy and shoot it out to him dont ever rush shooting a coon out to a young dog

If they dont get better pretty quickly when starting out they never do seem to hold much presure, IMO.

Tie him back and if you work him on a caged coon in a tree dont do it for very long at a time if he wants to mill or gets tired put himup.

Stay close to him get into that tree, Tie him up everytime !! without fail, even if you find the coon keep looking for the coon spend lot of time at trees......Its like guys with rabbit dogs, I for one dont like to spend a lot a time when rabbit holes cause I dont want them messing with hole. The only other thing I could add, let him tree at home on coon for long periods of time, do like I do, I got a neighbor I dont like so works pretty darn good both ways........

Get to the tree quick, tie him back, let him sit and tree for a good solid 10 min and then shoot the coon in the foot or somewhere where it will bleed from in the tree without coming out. I will guarantee if your dog is a tree dog at all, this will help!

if he's meeting u coming to the tree. tie him there and go on to the tree even if u don't have another dog with u. walk close to where u think he was and let him get all crazy. then pick up something heavy and then. shoot in to a limb. and then throw the object to sound like a coon falling. he'll fell like he's missing out. then get him and go. eveything these guys say i agree with too. but 1 more piece of advice if he's at the tree when u get there. and see the coon. tie him up and pet him up stay as long as his interest will. then knock it out. stay longer each time. before showing him the coon. the rock trick will work for young dogs on den trees and leafy trees. to build confindence. don't do this to much
