Tip on finding coons in pine trees.

Over my years of hunting I accidentally found a good way of finding coons up pine trees.
It was in late season when the coons are in shape here in the mountains and is not common to run completely over a mountain and tree on the back side. Done it many of times; it makes for a long walk and a later night which makes ya feel a lil rough the next day going into work. And which hurts even more is if you walk all the way to the tree and its a den tree or a big pine and you can't find him or the tree isn't climbable and all you can say to your dog is good job girl I know he's there lets go back to the truck which is heart breaking when you know your hound did such a good job working a long track.
Well I had done this same thing. I cut my dog loose one night up a hollow at the bottom of a mountain with a small creek in the bottom of the hollow where coons like to mill around and feed. Well She struck and the track sounded hot. I said to myself "She can see this one won't take long to tree em" Well a short run turned into her trailing bark disappearing over the top of the huge straight up mountain. Takes about a hour of hard walking at a good pace to walk up it and thats if your in good shape.
I said to myself "well it ain't doing me any good standing here I geuss I better start walking". I got the top and about a thrid of the way down over the backside and to the left she was tree chopping her heart out telling me "he's here dad come on!!!" So I hurried down hill to her. Got there it was a huge white pine. My heart sank. I said "D*mn!" So I looked and looked and looked some more but couldn't find him. So I snapped her up tied her to a tree about ten feet away. And from being wore out from walking up a mountain and knowing I got to leave this tree with out shooting a coon out to her made me feel bad. I sat down and at the bottom of the tree with my back to it and just happened to look straight up the base of the tree and saw a eye ball. I felt for my rugar 10/22 without taking my eye of the shiny eye and took aim "pop!" with one shot I got him.

Since that night I have found many many coons by putting my back against the bottom of the pine tree and looking straight up and sometimes you'll catch him looking down and there is less brush and limbs against the base of tree. Hope this helps.

Make sure

you walk all the way around the base of the tree. Dont just look up from on side. Yea croatankid the only thing that is in the way around the trunk of the tree is the bases of the main limbs growing out.

That happend to us Thurs night. We were on our way to the next spot and about 100 yards from where I park a coon crossed the road into the timber. We cut loose 4 dogs and the race was on!!! About 5 min and the dogs are treed. They was blowing the top out of the tree like osama was up there! It was a huge pine and we spent about 20min looking but never did see a thing. I could have climbed it but didn't. Next time I'm going to climb. I did try looking up the base but to no avail...

I hardly ever run and tree a coon in a pine. I find a bout half of the running coons in a pine if it goes up through a live oak the dogs tree on. If the dogs just trail or get a lay up it will prbably be in the oak but if it runs it will probably cross to a pine. You can almost count on it. In that case you can't see up the trunk for the oak limbs. I don't spend alot of time shining the oak when that happens. I shine and squal and hope for the best. But if the moon is right to where you can get it behind the top third of the pine tree they will show up about as good as if was a naked tree.

Yea all the coons ive ever had in a pine went up a oak or some sort of hard wood that dont have leaves that is next to a pine. Every time they will go in that pine tree lol.

killed many a coon out of a pine tree. They know they got cover their but sometimes you can find his lil a$$.
