Dock Dogs

i watched this show this weekend on the outdoor channel called DOCK DOGS dogs compete by running down a dock jumping in the water and swimming to fake duck they are judged on how high and how far they jump before hitting the water and the speed in witch they swim.
i know alot of events we as coon hunters attened have water races and as we all know our hounds usaully have tremendous muscle in the rear hips and legs from jumping up and down at trees.
all i saw were labs but i couldnt help but think how well a coon hound would do at this, what say yall

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.

I think the reason that sport has taken off is simply because it is a spectator sport and the dogs are perceived as non threatening in their chasing after a rubber ducky. To each his own. In general it's probably good PR for the sporting dog world of which we are a part.

It reminded me of how basic is the job of a retriever whereas how complex is the job of a coon dog.

It's funny that you said that. My daughter competed in a SRS Super Fly a few weeks ago. I thought real hard about taking my Bluetick just to try her. She loves to swim and retrieve. They usually have a time for amateurs to give it a shot before competition. A border collie won the amateur division

cedarhill

a good lab in the water is hard to beat i have a 13 year old male that constanly beats a top coon hound in the water and this coonhound has been undefeated in coondog races.

Swimming has nothing to do with dock events............it's all about the dog getting air and the distance.

Seen alot of events where non retrievers could flat out get the air and out do the traditional "water" dogs. Them little australian shepherd can put on a show.

HAAAAAAAAAA.......lmao.........would definitely have to tuck in them dumbo ears though........unless they would help-em "glide" through the air........
I would like to see that some day.....it would be pretty cool.....

yup.....I watched that very hound in the swim race.......with out that "ear wrap", they would actually pause for a split second to shake them ears.....ultimately slowing them down........

I would've gone with a camo wrap though

Ann & Aubry Butler (RedFever) has a sweet lookin' little Redbone female named Foxxy Roxxy, that will get some air for sure. She has been nick named Air Dog. During the water race competitions, when it's her turn, everyone stands around to see how much air she is gonna get straight out of the box. She's tuff! She comes out like a rocket, strong and graceful.

I have been wanting to enter some of my dogs in one of these for a while. There are 2 organizations that are big into the dock dog jumps, one lets you have another person hold the dog while you throw (would work for mine!) the other requires your dog to sit and stay until you give the command to retrieve (that wouldn't work so well for mine!). None of them use starting gates like they do at a swim race. All that being said the world record for a distance dock jump is still held by a dog named Country who is half greyhound and half 'coon' hound.
Country jumped; 28 feet 10 inches!
