Good rule question. Can this happen?
OK. Open your minds and think of this.
In the "General Information" section of the rules, under
C. Losses and Recoveries. It states that "At point where dogs lose trail and become quiet, Judge to start clock on dogs. After one minute has elapsed WITHOUT ANY DOG OPENING, all struck in dogs to be considered at a loss (check) and minused 20 points".
"WITHOUT ANY DOG OPENING"
So as long as a dog opens at least once a minute, the dogs never go into a check.
BUT
any 3 minute period without reasonable forward progress is considered a dead track.
SO
if the dogs stop moving a track but are still barking at least once a minute, the track would never go into a check but would end after 3 minutes due to no forward progress and all dogs would be -50. (or their strike points if it wasn't majority struck in).
Opinions? Thoughts?
That is correct, and I agree with it.

I've never saw it judged that way but it makes complete sense to me too.
When I say, its correct, I mean by the way the rule states it is. But some won't run the progression clock, till say maybe a min. or two into the track, depends on the judge, and his judgement.

Here is the easiest way to keep the clock...
say dogs shut up...
start clock....
at :43 seconds a dog opens but the track isn't recovered. (now you know it will be 1:43 before you go into check)
now at 1:30 a dog opens but the track isn't recovered. (now you know it will be 2:30 before you go into check)
at 2:30 dogs go into check....
:30 later the track is dead....

All of these are good only one more thing to be added, has to runnable by majority of the pack to get a check.
S and M,
The way you have you your question typed is the way that I do it. Once the 3 minutes starts it does not stop unless there is resonable forward progress made on the track or 3 minutes dead track gets them. Dogs can blow a hole in the ground barking a thousand times in that three minutes, If they dont make forward progress the track is DEAD. The cast will need to vote on place of refuge/ hole or NOT, So basically the majority of the cast must agree whether to minus them/plus them/ or circle them depending on the situation.
Thanks Bob,
I just go by the way the rules read and the way I have learned over time that they need to be applied to the best of my ability. If I am not that is why we have a vote to over rule me as a judge if the majority disagrees with me. People need to speak up if they disagree instead of saying once they get back to the club house I got screwed.
Thornie,
One dog can get a check by itself as long as the majority of the cast agrees that it had made resonable forward progress with the track.

Hey, thornie, didn't they change that a few years ago, on recovering a check, an individual dog can take the track, and recieve its recovery, it used to be that majority of the pack had to recover before the first dog that opened would get it. I believe this is the rule now.

Correct on the progression clock. Most everybody up my way judges them that way. Alot of guys don't because of the 50 minus. Everybody wants plus points, whether they deserve it or not.
One dog can recover the check by itself. They changed that two years ago.
