Getting geared up for competition
I am pretty new at this great sport and have spectated a few competition hunts and am very interested.
I would appreciate some recomendations on some gear to buy to get ready.Boots, chaps, lights( I have a western rivers 6 volt but was thinking about a belt light) tracking system, stopwatches. anything that i might need I would really appreciate some suggestions from any of you seasoned competition hunters on what brands to buy and where to get them thanks.
1st- Get a dog, without this you ain't coon hunting, your just walking in the woods hoping.
2nd- a GOOD light,I use to hunt with a box battery flashlight and once I got a good belt light you'l be surprised the coon you'll find, without this your possum, bird, turkey hunting!lol
3rd- a tracking system cause without this its just a matter of time before you wish you had one!!
4th-a compass never know where he might take you
5th- a car or truck unless your just gonna hunt behind your house, and somepeople hunt out of cars so don't laugh
PS:Remember you don't have to get the top of the line stuff just stuff that works try to find used stuff if price is an object from a good source,Maybe your dog can get some wins and the free stuff will be rolling in!!!
Good Luck
Thanks for the reply. any more suggestions?

know the rules.... pack a good solid consistent hound, and the best light you can afford.

another good thing is plenty of alone time. just you and your dog out and no other distractions. this is the best way for you and your dog to get ready. and never try to "argue" with your dog just call what you hear.

I'm pretty new at this to... I carry a tube of EMT gel in my tracking system bag at all times, and in my pocket in comp. hunts you don't never know when you will need blood stop!!! Anything can happen out there you know. If I go on a BIG hunt in another state and I'm gonna b there for a couple days I don't leave the house w/o know where the closest vet is located at in that town and program it in my cell. Go on and buy the extra cell phone insurance because i done had two the river claimed ( belive me the insurance is worth it ) Just be carefull out there
remember when your hunting close to home and you gotta call one of your buddies to drive by blowing the horn and flashing the lights so you can find your truck !!!! LOL we have all done it sometime along!! Have fun!!
Wish you the best!!!

All you NEED to make a coondog.
Make sure you keep a spare bulb with you for your light. It's a bad thing to have a good light with a blown bulb.
