Badger's are not a new spieces for Illinois.I live here in central Ill. The first one I seen was in 1979 run over on the road near the little town of Westfield. My buddy picked it up was going to have it mounted .Game warden got word of it and he **** near went to jail over it..Seen another in 1986 north of Charleston Ill. It was denned up in a square mile of open farm ground it was there 2 years dont know if it moved on on died.1993 my coonhound bayed one on the ground one night .took 57 stitch's to stop the bleeding.I trap muskrats on the river here last year I seen 11 diffrent ottter's they dont take kindly to being released from a foot hold trap.My buddy tell's every one that I'v been otter bit more than any one in the state.

No Joke! This was caught about 1986. The State of Ohio has a guy radio tracking them right now. They trap them and put tracking collars on them like we do our hounds. They have been listed as endangered since 1990 I believe! FYI I couldn't tell you if this one was mean or not. Ran trap one day it was 40 degrees. next day it was -5 This badger froze solid overnight!

I seen one two years ago that had been hit on Rt. 128 5 miles north of Shelbyville. There wasn't any timber really within a mile or two just open prairie. A guy I worked with at the time stopped and picked it up just to prove to everyone that it was really a Badger. I have heard the old timers talk about years ago getting into them a time or two. Never encountered one myself, and hope I don't.

I caught my first on in Indiana in about 1981.....in a fox trap.

They were listed as "endangered" then, so I track down the local game warden. He told me to turn it loose....I in turn told him that if he wanted it freed....I would be happy to show him where it was and he could turn it loose.

He told me to "kill it"....he did not want any part of it. I finally got it set free....those dudes have an attitude I'll tell you that much.

If you put a five gallon bucket on the ground, they will go right into it, and then you can flip the bucket (if you are quick enough)....if badgers are any indication of what an attitude is, I never, ever want to get close to a grizzly bear, cause badgers are just miniature grizzly bears...!!!

It takes a couple of tough hounds to kill one, bayed two in holes last winter. The hounds jerked them out of their hole but didn't seem to be able to hurt them. I am certain they won't have a problem with either one of those two again.

I live outside of a couple small towns Armington, Hopedale, and Delavan, north of Lincoln about 15mins towards peoria....I was hunting about .5miles from my house last night when the encounter accured...I was hunting my honey hole and know every inch of it...there is this old rail road track that used to run through there many years ago and most of you know how the tracks are elevated higher than the rest of the ground well i was headed up the hill of the RR b/c it didnt have all that dang Stinging Nettles/Itch Weed...and no more than i got to the top I heard this god awful snarl/growl/hiss and i look down and not 2 feet from me and the dog is this big ugly looking BADGER and i was walking right into it (almost stepped on it)....that thing scared me so bad that I yelled when I saw it!!! I was so shooken up that when i realized what it was (which was only a split second) I grabbed the dog and started running down the hill FAST!! I was by myself and running from it....A man is not nearly as tough without the rifle in his hands....you can bet your bottom dollar that I WILL be packin the next time i hunt my honey hole....I will get that SOB and show you all some pics...Only thing good that i can think of that came from the encounter was that I was 5 pounds lighter afterwords!! lol.
