Worming Young Dogs

I have used the ivermectin wormers for over 20 years on dogs over 1 year with great success... But, How young of a dog can I use it on? Would 4 or 5 month old pups be old enough? These are big 40 and 50 pound pups.. Thanks: Ron

Hey Ron,
No problem using Ivermectin on these pups orally at .2mg/kg or .1cc per 10 pounds of the 1% liquid solution. You can also use the horse paste Zimectrin or Zimectrin Gold at the same dose on the dial as the horse weight.

I believe ahallada is a vet so I'd go with what he said...

That and our vets said the same thing! We usually start ours around 5 mos. old and some haven't weighed but around 20-25 pounds so you should be fine.

Safeguard is Fenbendazole and works well too. It will get hooks, rounds, some tapes (not the flea tapeworm), and whipworms as well as Giardia if used for at least 3 days in a row. It is recommended to use this wormer for at least 3 days in a row however and you do have to use a larger volume because the dog dose is much larger than pigs/horses. It doesn't prevent heartworm however and does not treat or prevent ear mites or scabies mites like Ivermectin.

Zimectrin is straight Ivermectin so it gets heartworm, hooks, a % of roundworms depending on dose, whipworms again depending on dose, and prevents heartworm. It also kills otodectes ear mites and sarcoptic mange. It is the same thing as Zimectrin Gold without the Praziquantel for tapeworms.

Safeguard has the same active ingredient as Panacur which is labeled for dogs as a three day wormer.

I recommend using Pyrantel Pamoate with the Ivermectin because it is very safe and effective at the doses I've quoted previously. Check out that "Wormer" thread. I'll see if I can bump it to the top. Lots of good info there.

You can also safely deworm young pups under 8 weeks of age with pyrantel pamoate to get rid of roundworms.

If you see tapeworms in the stool you can just buy some praziquantel to get rid of them and improve your flea program.

I have used the Zimectrin gold on the older dogs for a few years now. It is good to know that I can use it on the younger dogs also.
I did worm them this morning..The help you can get on this site is a big plus when you raise a few dogs.. Thanks: Ron

This Zimectrin horse paste is ok to use on larger pups , but the dosing is too hard to figure out on pups under 20# so I'd recommend sticking with either Heartgard Plus tablets or Interceptor on these younger pups for heartworm prevention.

Heartgard Plus or Interceptor should be started at 2 months of age to prevent heartworm. I've seen some posts in here suggesting to wait until the pups are 6-8 months of age, but that is too late. Even at 2 months of age these parasites have a very slim change of making it to adults but with each month not used, that percentage increases.

Many veterinarians receive free sample doses of Heartgard Plus for 0-25# dogs and are recommended to give to new puppies. Ask your veterinarian if he has any of these sample doses as many are just thrown away.
