I'm normally on the cur and feist side but I hear about them crossing them walkers or hounds and can't find a pup.
I think the main reason for crossing them up is because it puts a different kind of hunt in them, makes them very versatile, also puts the winding ability back in a dog.
Most "Treeing Curs" are hound cur crossed or cur feist crosses. Can't seam to find a hound GSP cross.

Im with you. I have been wanting
to find a bird dog/coonhound cross as well. Some say houses bawlie had bird dog in him. Joe was a big time bird hunter I was told as well and had bird dogs so you could see where that could happen. If you look at old pics of him he looks just like what a 1/2 of each would look like. I saw some on the cur board awhile back but they were way over in ga. or some place.
I hope to one day find something like that to let run loose on the place to use as a combo dog coon/squirrel.
good luck finding what we are looking for. If you discover it before me let me know quick. I will do the same.
We may just have to find us a pointer female and make the cross ourselves.

I thought about just getting a GSP and makin the cross my self but just for a good pup with good blood from hunting stock ur lookin at 500-800 for a pup.
Also thought about finding one and crossing my cur on a male. Then We should have the best off all worlds.

I hear you...mite do that myself.
Do have a bird dog breeder down the road from me and I usually keep a good walker female most of the time. Might have to break down and pull it off myself. Good idea.

That's just it too, not to many GSP here in IN from good hunting stock cause we don't have much upland game.

Dont know about house But Merchants Bawlie was out of a Walker male and a female that was part black and tan and part retriever as my great uncle owned him and sold to Merchant. He also had a full brother that was registered as a Black and Tan and that is where Tam youngs dogs came from.
One of the best I ever saw go was part bird dog by the name of brandy could tree coons dogs never knew was there. Most of all our foundation stock was mixed dogs however now a days it's to pure that's the reason for all the slick treeing we have today in all breeds a little bird dog blood certainly wouldn't hurt anything. Jmo.
Dutchcreek, do you know the name of the dog that was registered as a Black and Tan? Thanks.

I have a buddy whose dad ran a hunt club in Florida for years. His dad claimed the best way to put grit into hog dogs was mix some GSP in.

Just get you a blue tick. It's already been bred in. I had 7 liver ticks last year out of 12 pups. Gave them all away. 2 of them are making coon dogs. Tight built, good loud mouths, gritty, can straighten out a bad track, dance on their feet winding, stay treed, started treeing on scent at 8 weeks, killed a coon by themselves before they were 3 months old, treed squirrels and shot out to them with a shotgun,..............all this happened because of the opportunity and handling by the owner. He said he has not had dogs like that in more than 20 years, and none that aggressive on a coon of any breed at that young of an age. The pups were born that way. They got them weird colored eyes, not dark. They are blue tick not liver. Dogs are doing to good to be hunted in Florida.

Believe the B&T mate to Bawlie was Chocolate Mike. Mike is where Tiger Lilly came from.
Devils child, is a quarter bluetick believe. If I was looking to make an out cross I would look at him first. I believe it was his mother who was out of a bluetick walker cross. Heard she was an exceptional hound.
I talked with a guy the other day on this very subject. For the right price I can breed a jam up Bluetick to his GSH female. He said he doesn't want to have to get rid of the pups though. I told him I was pretty sure I can get rid of the pups. The Bluetick is Spring Hill breed with a triple shot of Raisin Cain and Jenny. He ain't mine but he comes outa the truck slingin dirt and in his first comp hunt was treed 10 minutes before the other dogs could get to him. He went across the big swamp and the other dogs went around it.

Bird dog
It is a common known fact that most of today's hounds go back to a lot if bird dog and I believe more needs to be put back in and here is why. Back before DNA was involved they claim breeders put bird dig in for a few different reasons. The main 2 speed with a powerful nose. A hound does not run a track with there head in the air and a bird dog can pinpoint were game is better like which tree the coon is in. Most bird dog is found in walker and English dogs that is the main reason they dominate the completion hunts. I wish they would put more bird dog back in because they use there nose and brain together were a hound uses more just with nose. And bird dogs have way more energy and a lot more athletic. I've heard all this cold hot nose stuff. The big question you have to ask yourself. Do you want your hound to tell you we're the coon was 3 hours ago or tell you we're one is RIGHT NOW? Put more bird dog back in and and you will find yourself back at the truck faster lookin at more eyeballs.
There are thousands of great hounds out there throwing pups that anyone would love, and you would rather go down to the neighbors and breed to his shorthair?
And why a shorthair, if you are going to breed to a friggin bird dog at least breed to a EP, or a Setter.
