Pup ?

I've got a ten month old coming on strong and when I knock one out to her she goes in to kill it. My trouble is she will not leave the dead coon. Sometimes I like to bring the coons out to skin but you can't stand to pack one around her. Is it ok the wip over this? Or what is best thing to do? She just started treeing her own a few months ago.

Put her on the lead and let her carry it out. It will get heavy and she will get bored with it.

Good advice.Shes a pup. For gods sake dont whip her over having a lot of prey drive. Thats what a lot of dogs lack. Another thing you can do is throw the coon back up in the tree.That way the last thing shes remembers is the coon up in the tree. That may create a problem of her returning to the tree but use a litttle common sense and work with her. I absolutely believe in obediance training but more dogs have been ruined at a young age by rough handling then helped.

I'll try a few different things. I let her pack one out a little while back she had it gutted by the time I made it back to the truck lol. If all else fails I guess I'll just start packing them out in a backpack. I'm really liking her and was just curious for some tips

I always skinned my coon right where I shot them. Mostly because an 18-20 lb. coon gains weight after you carry it a half mile or more back to your truck! I have a nylon day pack that I’d put a large garbage bag in. Take along a container of hand wipes for clean up. Coon skin the best when they’re warm! Once that hide is in the pack it’s out of sight out of mind.

Just teach her that the coon is dead and her job is done for now. Keep her on a real short lead on one side of you and the coon on the other. You will have to pull her back and tell her dead repeatedly, but they are smart and they will learn and get tired of being pulled back. Before you know it with just a couple time of saying dead coon she will be walking out like normal. I carry almost every coon out and this works for me. Its just reps and patients. The only thing I will say is they know if that coon is not 100% dead and you might think it is. So if you feel like your getting somewhere then all of a sudden she wont quit trying to get to the coon double check that its dead.

I find Ed Hillenbrand's method works well. If he drops it and wants to pick it up again allow him to pick it up. Pretty soon he won't want to carry them.

Disposable latex gloves. I've had several pups that were bad about not leaving a dead coon alone. Whether somebody was carrying it while you're trying to lead the dog or just won't leave cause its worried about the coon in the truck. Start whooping on one for it can get their wires crossed up pretty bad. One's I've had forget about it after its skinned.

The easiest way is to let the coon in the tree alive. 2nd easiest is to let the coon where it falls there not worth carrying out. 3rd would be to become the alpha.

Good thought... no idea why anyone would want to be shooting out coons to a dog very often when they are not worth any money.

carry a good heavy plastic bag with you

tie the pup up and let her chew on it for a for a short while as a reward

Don't play tug of war over it ...that will become a game!

when you are ready to take it from her
grab one of her front paws and squeeze til she lets go and tell her "dead!"
throw the coon out of her reach with your other hand than go put the coon into the plastic bag!

throw the bag over your shoulder and cut her loose she will look for it than smell around for it tell her dead and start walking and make her go hunting again
than you can chuck the coon and reuse the bag

everytime you take her from a tree that you don't knock one down tell her dead and lead her away she'll learn it's time to find another one
