Traits
What are the basic traits that a coonhound must possess?
To me they are:
1. Track
2. Tree
3. Hunt
4. Intelligence
What do y'all think?
Be intelligent!
Tar
Tarbaby, that is a good one that I forgot.
1. Can a dog develop, learn or be trained to run a track?
2. Can a dog dog develop, learn or be trained to tree?
3. Can a dog develop, learn or be trained to hunt deeper or closer or more independently?
4. Can a dog be trained or develop more intelligence?
You can train a dog to fetch a ball. You can train a dog to find missing lost persons. But with coon hounds if they are not intelligent enough to have coons in their trees a majority of the time you are wasting a lot of training!
Tar
Tarbaby, can you train a dog to be more accurate?
I used to think I could but had some last year I couldn’t lol.
Tar
So they have to be intelligent to be trained. Now how about tracking? Do they have to have the nose before they can develop tracking skills?

IN ORDER.
A: ability
B: brains
C: conformation
Without all three they will never achieve their potential.
the last one (conformation, I don't mean show quality. They need to be put together so they can stand the rigors of constant and hard hunting.
I believe if you have a dog with these three things all that is left is the training, which is just as important as the other 3. AND MANY TIMES THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST PROBLEM AS TO WHY THE DOG NEVER ACHIEVED THEIR FULL PONTENIAL.

Accurate
No matter what a dog does or how well he does it means nothing to me if he doesn’t have a coon when he trees. Accuracy is number one for me !!
