Tracking collar advice.

I'm all new to this. But I'm looking for advice for tracking collars. The last dog I had we had an old radio type collar, but it was several years ago. I remember itwas not very rreliable. The dog's are going to be my boy's digs, so losing them is not an option period. The most I will be able to hunt is 1-2 nights a week. I'm not typically a gadget guy buy I can figure most smart phone and such out. I just need some suggestions so I don't buy something that will be obsolete in a couple years. Thank you I'm advance.

Garmin Alpha with TT15 collars

Garmins are really great but expensive. You could possible pick up an older model cheaper than a new one. The old "beep-beeps" really work good if used right. Locate the dog, then move about 100 yards right or left and locate the dog again. This is called triangulating and will pin point where the dog is.

Is there a distance to the beep beep type? And do you have a brand or model?

wildlife makes a good beep beep collar but I wuld recommend looking into a garmin astro 220 or 320 older systems but still work great an can be picked up around 3-4 hundred bucks used

Am I safe to assume any of the Garmin collars work with any hand held?

Handheld. Garmin Astro 220 or 320 used on eBay

Collars. Garmin DC 30 or DC 40 used on eBay.

I would suggest getting a new Garmin system but if you want to get a used one then call and get it from a dealer. So if something is wrong when you get it they will replace it. With ebay and those places you are gambling getting something like this. Coonhunters and dogs are to rough on them and most of the older used stuff Garmin will not fix anymore.

Garmin is the way to go at least at this time. I like the Alpha because it combines track and train and my experience has been good. And no not all collars work with all Garmin hand helds.

Thank you for all the advice. I will probably get new garmin. The local co on hunters club has a nitehunt and bench show later next month. I hope to meet some folk to help me out a bit. Hope to find some gear, lights and such. We took a 40% pay cut after losing my job in 2015. So we are just getting back on our feet. That said, boys only grow up once.

X2 dealer is the only way to go

If you want something that will track your dogs but isn't crazy or expensive, I still use a Astro 220 with dc30s. It shows how far my dogs are and in what direction and that's all I really need.

Id go with the beep beep ,more reliable and alot less money, get one and practice with it ,send the kids off in the woods with the transmitter until you get the hang of it before using it on your hounds,,my experience was the dealers dont back a new garmin so i dont see them backing a used one
